G21 AFRICA - THE GAME TO COME - STEVE OGAH writes about the up-coming football match between Italy and England to take place in Athens, Greece, this week.

Lagos, NIGERIA - On 23 May 2007, the final match of the champions league will be played in Athens, Greece. The champions league represents the best in European continental club football (soccer.) The two teams that have made it to the finals are AC Milan of Italy and Liverpool FC of England. On account of history, these are two great soccer teams that deserve to be in the finals. An d it promises to be a great game of soccer action if we remembrer that, just two years ago, these two teams met in the final of this competition. So here is my take on the?great game to come.

AC Milan of Italy has an intimidating pedigree in the Italian Serie A.They have?a room full of Scudetos[ Italian league trophies] and other soccer trophies including the European Cup.Of course, this is the impulse that drives the team - a rich history of soccer excellence. It is this attribute that has taken Milan so far.

Milan plays a highly physical and rugged style of football only fit for the strong-hearted and lovers of contact sports. The Italian league is, of course, reputed to?be the toughest in the world, with a crude way of ending the careers of promising but weak footballers. The strength of the?Italian team is its strength.

The likes of?Gattuso in the midfield,?ageing?Paulo Maldini in defence, and Kaka in attack, drives this Italian team for glory in this current campaign. The other?players are no less crucial, as was evident in the last game against Manchester of England at the San Siro in Italy.

It?was a game Milan had control of from the blast of the whistle and I am not surprised that they defeated the English team by three good goals. Manchester United was so disunited that it could not afford a consolatory goal. It was that epic semi-final match that?has set up the meeting with Liverpool FC.

Liverpool's soccer club is no pushover when it comes to writing European club soccer history. Five times, they have?won the European Cup. The last time[2005] it was against AC Milan. What makes that victory truly special is the way it was achieved.

The team recorded one of the greatest come-backs in European socceer history when it came from three goals down to level up, then win via penalty shoot-outs. The team is?also driven by a strong sense of history and pride in its achievements. By far, it is the greatest English side on the European continent.

Steven Gerrard is the captain of the team. He truly deserves that honour. Against Chelsea of England in the last semi-final game, he was the field marshal of an army desperate for victory. Two years ago, he also propelled the team?in great measures. With palyers in the mold of Robbie Fowler,?Peter Crouch, and?Kuyt; the final against old rivals Milan promises to be?a clash of soccer giants.

? ?

Milan wins. No! Liverpool wins.?No! It doesn't?really matter much who wins eventually. The truth remains that football will be the ultimate winner when the giants of Europe meet in the ancient city of Athens, Greece. As watchers of the game?in Africa, we shall be waiting for the great game, hoping our teams shall someday also be the?sweet focus of the?footballing world.
