my world is unaffected,
there is an exit here I say it is and then it's true,
there is a dream inside a dream,
I'm wide awake the more I sleep
you'll understand when I'm dead
I went to god just to see, and I was looking at me saw heaven and hell were lies
when I'm god everybody dies
scar/can you feel my power?
shoot here and the world gets smaller
scar/scar/can you feel my power?
one shot and the world gets smaller
let's jump upon the sharp swords
and cut away our smiles
without the threat of death
there's no reason to live at all
---- excerpted from "The Reflecting God" by Marilyn Manson

When we are in darkness we go to the light. When are in shock and disbelief we search for enlightenment. The slaughter of 12 students and one teacher at Columbine High School in Littelton, Colorado, by two teenage gunmen shakes the nation to the core of the soul. During one terrible day, more Americans died in a hail of bullets and bombs right here than in a month in Kosovo. Seems while President Clinton decided to go looking for trouble in Yugoslavia, he and the rest of Washington forgot about the domestic terrorists on the homefront.

Something must be done. Exactly what, no one can say. However, somebodyhas to be responsible for the murderous deeds of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.

"Round up all of the usual suspects," as the police said in Casablanca. Sure enough out comes a Who's Who of fringe subculture:

  • dark sunglasses and long black trenchcoats,
  • the head-banging shock rock 'n' roll as performed by Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails,
  • graphically violent video games and films.

In less than a week's time accusing fingers were pointed at everything from the massacre occurring on the day after the fourth anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing to it being Adolf Hitler's 110th birthday.

Liberals whined about the easy access of guns.

Conservatives stuck it to lax parents and the content of a unregulated World Wide Web.

Everyone had a convenient scapegoat at whose feet the blame could be lain.

Child psychologists and authors whose books on killer kids had been gathering dust at Barnes and Noble found their phones ringing off the hook from networks looking for some instant analysis. What city didn't have a news anchor announce just before breaking for commercial, "Next, we'll have an expert who will tell us the seven warning signs every parent should look for to predict if Johnny will become a gun-wielding psycho."

The easy thing to do in a senseless situation is to demand more law and order. Parents must be held accountable and in some cases, legally culpable, for the actions of their children.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) scaled back to one day, but refused to outright cancel, their scheduled convention in Denver. NRA officials helpfully suggested passing conceal-and-carry gun laws and arming school principals.

Yeah, great idea guys but why think small? Why not go all out and train teachers in Navy SEAL combat tactics and station an Apache helicopter armed with Hellfire missiles on the roof of every American high school?

More laws will be passed.

More studies will be commissioned.

The investigation and eventual prosecution of...someone will occur because the public will demand somebody be held accountable.

Black Enterprise is a monthly business-service publication for African-American professionals, entrepreneurs, and corporate executives. Through its monthly features and departments, the magazine examines critical personal finance, money, and career management issues with a hands-on, how-to style.

Right now, the only professionals in Littlelton outnumbering cops and reporters are lawyers trying to line up clients to sue everybody connected to this carnage. For as sure --- as day follows night --- lawsuits and calls for censorship bloom like crabgrass in this super-heated environment.

There are times when it is difficult to explain the WHY of a situation and this is beginning to look awfully like one of those times.

Klebold and Harris spared the taxpayers the expense of their trials by killing themselves so they won't be answering questions in any court of this world's jurisdiction. That inconvenient detail won't stop every social critic with an axe to grind from associating blame to their favorite patsy.

People who had never heard of "Gothic" music and dress are driving themselves to distraction listening to Maryln Manson CD's. The Internet is being madly surfed for Goth websites dripping with doom and gloom. "Look, I found one!" is probably the cry going out in newsrooms.

CBS News' "60 Minutes" featured a piece where violent video games such as Doom and movies featuring auteur splatter scenes as in "Natural Born Killers" and "The Basketball Diaries" took the weight for triggering sick minds into committing murder. Bet anything that those flicks flew off of the shelves of your friendly, neighborhood video store over the weekend.

Expelling body pierced students sporting black fingernails and trenchcoats will not stop the shootings. Calls for censoring the access of children to the Internet is the cry from pinheads who confuse access to dangerous ideas to putting them into action. If you locked up everyone who ever listened to KMFDM, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails or any other band that worshiped death, gloom and dementia you'd overflow every prison cell in the country.

As the words "Monica Lewinsky" and "impeachment" vanish from the airwaves, in rushes "Trenchcoat Mafia" and "Goth" to fill the void.

Beyond all the blabbering and blathering from experts and talking heads on television it begins to dawn just how clueless these people really are.

As the body count dwindled from 25 to 20 to 15, so too did the misinformation and confusion mount. The more we hear the less we know about what set off the two misfits at Columbine.

What must be emphasized in this insatiable urge to find a goat to bear the burden is that two young boys went nuts, armed themselves to the teeth and shot up a high school.

We can blame computers, uninvolved parents, bad music, black clothes and dead dictators if that's what satisfies.

The only person who seemed on point over whom should take the hottest heat over the Columbine slaughter was Andy Rooney of "60 Minutes" who used his minutes to remind the viewers it was the nuts with the guns and bombs who spilled the blood. I agree.

I think a lot less about what motivated their rage than I do about the courage of teacher Dave Sanders who saved numerous students before slowly bleeding to death over three hours while SWAT teams milled around. The wellspring all this pain and misery flows from was conceived, crafted and carried out by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Their names should remain first and conspicuously foremost on any list of guilty parties.
