WHAT PRICE DIVERSITY - Some social commentators claim that when a society has been said to improve, it has merely changed, for any benefit has an equally powerful opposite. For instance, materialistic progression would be countered by social deprivation, which in turn raises questions about what society should and should not value.
One largely held belief nowadays is that cultural diversity should be encouraged and nurtured, and although it has grown at inconsistent paces throughout the world, many in the West feel more free than ever before because they now have more choice in how to live their life, as they no longer feel threatened by alternative lifestyles. Yet if a black man rapes a white woman, or a homosexual man abuses a boy, some call for the end of diversity.

Spain Teens Tell Why They Killed

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Two Spanish teen-age girls said they killed a 16-year-old friend because it would help them "become famous," news reports said Tuesday.
The girls, 16 and 17, whose names were not released, were arrested Sunday in the southern town of San Fernando de Cadiz after police found the body of Clara Garcia with 18 stab wounds in a nearby field. The two were jailed Monday on murder charges.
Investigative magistrate Juan Jose Parra said that under questioning, the girls said killing Garcia made them "feel good" and would help them "become famous." |
Others attack those as "bigots", and rightly say that rape or child abuse is not confined to skin colour or sexual preference. From this logic therefore, an interest in religion that breaks from the norm should not be prevented merely because of the problems it could lead to.
There is a specific case prompting these thougths of mine.
Recently one of the most shocking crimes was committed in San Fernando, Southern Spain, that sent alarm bells ringing as to the benefits of diversity, but also issued a warning to the developed world that unless the nature of diversity is altered, the 21st Century may be the cruellest one yet. Two girls, aged 16 and 17, brutally murdered a 16 year old girl because they wanted to be famous and enjoy extreme experiences. According to Spanish papers, two strange classmates invited Clara Garcia Casado for a night out. They drank alcohol, took drugs and then stabbed her dozens of times, broke her fingers, tore her nails out and almost severed her head.
The two girls had been friends from an early age when they felt ostracised by the one-dimensional nature of Southern Spanish life. They developed an interest in ouija boards and were instantly ostracised by their Catholic elders.
Pushed further to the edge the two began exploring the occult, which in turn gained them labels such as "monsters", "satanic" and "witches to the pyre".
Now more blocked out of society than ever before, the two girls encouraged each other to follow a morbid interest in horror stories and Spanish murderers, particularly a teenage boy who killed his family with a Samurai sword. The Spanish press, having learnt nothing from the causes of their crimes, now refers to them as "evil".
Oppressing a change in lifestyle should be discouraged more than the new lifestyle is, no matter how potentially dangerous it could be. If oppression is not used as a last resort then it could create the reality of what is trying to be avoided, but in a much more extreme form.
If diversity in all forms is not encouraged then we can never know what we feel is right or wrong for us as individuals. Different people will not be given the opportunity to assimilate into society as they are pushed out of it. As Clara Garcia Casado tragically discovered, when that happens the world can become a depressing, boring and even violent place.
