RDR logo. PORK? - Even as "Mouthpiece Media" anchors like Judy Woodruff of CNN tell us that coverage of the Republican National Convention is a "significant" part of the American democratic process, most of the rest of us --- press and civilians --- have to wonder about a few things.

What are we wondering about?

  1. If only 144 of the Republican party delegates take part in the party platform process, out of 4000, what are the others doing there?
  2. If this convention is only a coronation, since the Presidential and Vice-Presidential nominees have already been chosen, what are the delegates doing there?
  3. If the primaries were irrelevant, what are the delegates doing there?

This morning I received an e-mail from G21 Alumnus, recently resigned Editor-in-Chief of the Columbus (OH) Post, and my fellow scribe JEFF WINBUSH. He was sharing that e-mail from a journalistic covering the Republican convention in Philadelphia. I want to share it with you.

But first, let me give you Jeff's introductory statement: "This was sent to me by a sister who is covering the RNC stroke-fest in Philly. If this doesn't remind you who really owns this country, nothing will.

Read it and be afraid...be very afraid."

Herewith a transcript of that woman's message, with names covered to protect the innocent.

Hello everyone!

After about two weeks, I have been able to compile a list of dozens of the corporate-sponsored parties that will be held over the next week for the delegates and politicians. I am sending out the list for you guys for whatever research purposes you have. I've included the place, sponsor, time, and guests, or at least as much as I have!!!

A couple of things to keep in mind.

1. This list is just scratching the surface. Most lobbyists estimate that there are approx. 500 corporate-sponsored events taking place this week. I have been able to find out maybe 30!

2. These are hella expensive! (to slip into my Norcal slang.) To throw a 'reception/hospitality suite' at a large hotel for four hours costs $65 a head. If only 100 show up, that $6,500 right there. The breakfasts cost between $2,500 and $15,000. God knows how much it costs to rent out the Indpendence Seaport Museum.

3. These are all invite only. I couldn't even get myself invited.

4. One thing was absolutely astounding. When I asked to see individual delegates' schedule, I noticed that there was nothing on it except partying. No debates, roundtable discussions, strategy sessions, nothing. Just golf, food, and drink.

I will be posting this list to the Philly IMC website today so people can look at it. AND I must give props to XXXX for giving me this idea in the first place!!!

Ongoing all week: Commerce Bank is offering a hospitality suite for the New Jersey delegation at the Doubletree Hotel.

Ongoing: Rohm and Haas Co. is offering a daytime hospitality suite for delegates and credentialed visitors at its Center City >office, at 100 Independence Mall.

I couldn't figure out the times for these:

Microsoft, Boeing are hosting receptions for Washington state's delegation.

A Philadelphia block party at the Naval Business Center for Senator Curt Weldon sponsored by Boeing

AT&T cruise up Delaware - Mass, Rhode Island, Conn

Merck Pharmaceuticals is throwing a party at the Independence Seaport Museum on Penn's Landing.

The Rippon Society and a congressional advisory board are hosting a "Breakfast to celebrate the accomplishments of a Republican Congress" at the Great Hall at the Philadelphia Convention Center. It's sponsored by 3M and Daimler Chrysler Corp.

There will also be golf outings all day during the week at almost every local course, sponsored by various corporations and PACs.

In a year where the democratic process in the United States of America has become passionless, in my view, when we have decided that corporatism rules the entire process, the litany presented above JUST MIGHT explain why. Delegates are like drunken conventioneers at any other junket. Some journalists, like Judy Woodruff, may call this how the system works, I call this another form of pork. This is just the first celebration party for the cronies.

This week's Poll: Vote now!

RDR RECOMMENDED SITE OF THE DAY: Thanks to the Chicago Sun Times, we learn that a black man grew up in Nazi Germany --- something completely unimaginable --- and lived to write about it. This is worth a serious look, Kidlings! (Thanks, and a tip of the hat to G21 Alumnus JEFF WINBUSH.)
