Now, I must state from the onset that this piece will not be as long as my usual commentaries on the sorry state of my homeland and the world around us. Personally, though, I don't think tributes should be long; we'll leave that to eulogies. Besides, anything longer than this, and I feel certain Rod will send me an e-mail saying -- KNOCK IT OFF, NGOZI!
I've only been a staff writer with the magazine a few months, yet I feel qualified to say these few words about Rod.
As an Editor: He is outstanding, setting and achieving enviable standards for the magazine. Check out other e-magazines and you'll agree there isn't any quite like G21. He has done for e-magazines what CNN did for journalistic TV, bringing news from around the world to your doorstep, um, fingertip. In addition, I don't know how he reads everything we send him, but he certainly does. I should know because I've seen sentences turned around in my write-ups and paragraphs appear where they should be.
As a person: I have never known anyone bare their life like he does in his column, "My Glass House". Reality TV couldn't possibly capture anything this good or captivating. And the interesting part about it is that he wades through the murky waters of life with an upbeat attitude. It is an inspiration.
As a boss: You don't want to cross swords with him. Believe me, distance is no barrier. And like Thomas Hart said in "My Last Hurrah," he has no
problem crackin' the danged whip!
As a writer: No one writes like Rod, period! Recently, there was a "Write like Rod" competition on the magazine and, when I got the promo mail, I said to myself, "I could never write like Rod," and that is the gospel truth. His style and voice cannot be replicated.
On his philosophy of life: "Work like you don't need the money; Dance like nobody's watching; Love like you've never been hurt ... " Let us know in "My Glass House" when you find that special woman!
In my country, we do not let out three hearty cheers. We let out three heart gbosas. So, here we go:
From Africa: GBOSA! GBOSA! GBOSA!
From the rest of the world: GBOSA! GBOSA! GBOSA!
LONG LIVE ROD!
LONG LIVE THE CONTRIBUTING WRITERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD!
LONG LIVE G21 -- THE WORLD'S MAGAZINE!
I'm outta here!
LAGOS, NIGERIA - In my country, as is the practice elsewhere in the world, tributes are so often paid to the dead. I have often wondered why and to what purpose. Dead men don't feel no pain; they don't hear no tributes, either. Anyway, I am a firm believer of seeking out worthy occasions to pay tribute to those deserving of it, and I doubt if there is a better occasion to do so to our esteemed editor than on the celebration of the 400th issue of our magazine, G21 -- The World's Magazine.

A SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: My little girl will be one on the 16th of November. Permit me to wish this sweet little girl, who has been the inspiration for some of my articles, many happy returns, long life and God's blessings, and to share some cyber-cake with you and friends at G21 and around the world. -N.R-S.
