RDR Logo. ACHIEVING AN EMPTY MIND - I find that I need to be able to empty my mind in order to focus on putting out a new edition of this Web magazine and today I couldn't really accomplish that. First there was a court appearance attendant to my on-going penury. (Yes, it's come to that.) Mike called from California to see if I had heard from the Brits. Dmitri sends a copy of a report from the Quebec protests. More queries came in and story samples. I just couldn't get focused. I used the travel and waiting time to pick up Valdas Anelasuskas's wonderful, fact-filled Discovering America As It Is again. That begged for attention and corrolation of facts to fuel a new policy essay some time soon.

I have been reading auto industry stats on Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs.) They are producing insane profits for the industry. Billions of dollars, while polluting like crazy (because lobbying money has kept Congress from taking them out of the "light truck" category,) guzzling gasoline (the oil companies are dancing in the streets, too,) and turning America back into the world's #1 unashamed fossil fuel hog. The auto industry itself admits that a full 90% of the people it sells these things don't tow anything, never haul cargo and NEVER, EVER go off-road!

This makes my blood boil!

Life intrudes: when am I going to start packing?

More and more I am finding that my own ideas about life, ecology, creativity, politics, the humane are at odds with those of my country. I am entertaining the idea that I should leave the United States for good...

So this update of the edition came with me kicking and screaming. I just wanted to read, digest what I was reading, think. I need to chart the next course even as time barrels forward and obligations batter down the door.

A friend sent a copy of a technical editor position for a West Coast publisher who wants to do a book on Mac OS X. I sent back my CV. In response, the HR person says: "This guy seems more like a news reporter than a technical editor, doesn't he?" Well, yes. I'm a journalist. That is my Day Job.

Impressionist photo of a woman in blue.My friend was concerned that I'd be upset. "Don't take it personally..." Upset? Nope. I've been an ink-stained wretch for years. But maybe I should try to do something else.

Going over the Binj's piece on prawn palaver, I visualize the fishmonger and the woman haggling in the hot sun. Heat has never bothered me that much. Maybe I should move to Africa.

But what about AIDS? What are wars and revolutions? What about malaria?

Oh yeah, right. I forgot what a spoiled American I am...

Nothing in my "RDR" folder. Great. That means it's up to me again. (Ate the last of the sphagetti last night. Hmmnh... There's still a few eggs, peanut butter --- oh yeah, I have beans. Add a few spices to the pot. Okay. I should have never done that food article today...)

I kept running up against the problem of emptying my mind. I need to achieve an empty mind in order to focus on updating an edition of this thing, but life intrudes...

What kind of example are you setting for the writers doing a stream-of-consciousness piece? This space is reserved for coherent essays!

An e-mail comes in from an old high school friend. She writes that she knows I'm going through a tough time right now, but that "...a lot can change in 24 hours."

I try to take it in the spirt given. But I can't keep myself from thinking: "Yeah, a check could bounce. I could have a heart attack. The server could crash..." Tough to keep the old cynic from bubbling to the surface.

I try to compose a coherent essay as I pace the room, but I can't achieve an empty mind.

I look around wondering what in the apartment needs to be sold. I think about putting up fliers before next week, have people call for appointments.

Nobody telephones except Mike and bill collectors. It would be good to talk to a friend right now, but since I stopped making the long distance calls...

A cheap way to get to Europe or Asia would be to sign up as an international courier. Need to research that....

It crossed my mind the other day that I moved to San Francisco in May, those many years ago. I moved to this bay city in May two years ago. May seems to be the time I choose for relocating most often. Only, after going to see my mother as I promised, I have no idea where ("any-where") I'm headed this time. And that's scarey.

Only a few more weeks to go before I leave. So much to do.

WEB SITE PICK OF THE DAY: Dmitri sent this one in after reading Monday's essay. He thought it would be a good place for those of you interested in activism. ProtestNet.
