I have to thank all of you who have supported this effort over the years for your words of encouragement, your contributions and your love. But let's face it, I'm not AOL Time Warner and I sure as Hell am not Daddy Warbucks. It takes money to support a Web site of this quality and, guess what? I'm broke. I have credtiors banging at my door and ringing my phone off the hook. As one friend nailed it yesterday, I take care of G21 and its writers and don't feed myself. This must end.
As much as I've loved this and love this medium, this must end.
But right now it's still open. It's still a frontier where tiny sites like this one, supported out of one guy's hip pocket have a chance.
You know what? I would give my eye-tooth (already lost the other one) to stay here and fight. I don't think those bastards deserve to take over this last frontier.
But like everything in America and this world, it boils down to money. EVEN IF by some stroke of luck my publisher's at my Day Job in London were to pay me, I'd be months behind.
So I went to bed two nights ago saying, "Make an end."
Humorously, (if you have perverse sense of humor like I do) my newest client in California told me on the telephone, "No, Rod, don't quit the G21! You have by far one the best publications on the Web. I know tons of journalists and tech people who read you. You have great writers. Your problem is that you don't have a business model. It's obvious that it's all about loving to get the truth out there. Truth doesn't sell."
That's it.
Thanks for The Love - I guess it's ironic in a sense. Even as our new columnist MAX ADAMS gets kudos from all over the place, even being featured on the cover of The Media Channel this week, I'm thinking "Yeah, throw in the towel."
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the future of publishing is right here on the World Wide Web. In fact, in terms of freedoom and communication this medium may be our last, best hope. Right now it is one of the only mediums NOT controlled by corporate conglomerates.
But that can change. It may change if AOL Time Warner, AT&T or News Corp have their way.
