[EDITOR'S NOTE - When I first received Ms. Vicanovic's essay, I was taken aback. She was not on my contact list in the former-Yugoslavia, either in Slovakia, Serbia, or Kosovo. I am suspicious of unsolicited material, particularly when it comes with photographs like those included in the accompanying photo-essay.

Was this some Milosevic operator planting a story? I had to wonder.

When I wrote Ms. Vicanovic asking how she knew the G21 was covering this story and why she had contacted me, I learned that she is a colleague of Rastislav Durman, whose work appeared here in our KOSOVO TRIANGLE edition last week. I breathed a sigh of relief. -RA

INTRODUCTION - An e-mail from Dragana Vicanovic, 12 April, 1999:

Dear Mr Amis,

Thank you for your response and the chance to disclose my opinion about this madness that's happening to my country. Personally, there are no animosity in my heart towards American people or any other NATO nation. But it's hard to forgive and forget the politicians of those countries, their administrative machinery and their aptitude to play computer war games despite so many imperilled human lives. And especialy their intentions to muffle the real truth about their aspirations with such a horrible lies. It hurts. In the meantime, innocent people are dying and entire families are murdered by NATO missiles. And the attacked nation - Serbs - are accused for other people's crimes. It hurts even more.

It's raining in Belgrade tonight - one of those toxic rains elicited by depleted uranium bombs. You don't have to trust my words, but Greek scientists warned Italy, Albania, Romania, Austria and other near-by countries on the danger that is threatening them from toxic rains which started on March 25 - a day after NATO aggression on Yugoslavia. A lot of people will die from cancer (just like in Bosnia) in next few years, not only here, but all over [the] Balkan[s]. But the bombing is continuing.

While I'm writing to you now, I can hear explosions outside. The last information says that NATO attacked again Kragujevac (Zastava, civilian automobile factory is being bombed with 9 missiles just now and the night is still young. For the third time in 20th century this factory is demolished - first time at 1914. by Austrian empire, second time at 1941. by Germans.), again Pancevo rafinery (allready destroyed), periphery of Belgrade, Pristina and Novi Sad. But the bridges here in Belgrade, in Novi Sad, Sremska Mitrovica, Indjija and other citys are full of people who are trying to protect them. Even tonight, couple thousands of workers are protecting with their lives the remains of Zastava factory in Kragujevac. And tonight is second Easter night for us.

If you need any other informatin about present situation and consequences of NATO bombings or photographs, I'll be glad to send you. I've got your adress from my very best friend, Mr Rastislav Durman from Slovakia. We used to work together on TV Novi Sad.

Regards,
Dragana Vicanovic

BELGRADE - Our country is attacked... Without [a] war declaration, without [the] legitimate decision of [the] UN Security Council. So many international charters, decisions and constitutional articles has been broken by [the] NATO countries involved in this horrible aggression, not to mention morality.

So many people, and most of them are innocent civilians, are already dead - murdered by their bombs and missiles.

At the very first day of aggression, NATO bomb destroyed [a] refugee camp and killed 18 of them.... Destruction of our factories, bridges, schools, is continuing. Those who survive will have no jobs for a long time. The actual genocide took place in so many towns and willages everywhere in Yugoslavia.

The most painful are lies and double morality. NATO officials claim that the aggression against [a] sovereign state is the only way to restrain humanitarian catastrophe in [the] Serbian province of Kosovo. Yet, they sling most bombs on Kosovo - destroying Serbian and Albanian villages and towns without difference. Pristina, the largest town in Kosovo is already destroyed. [The] Entire civilian quarters defaced from [the] earth, although there were not a single trace of any military or police attendance. Entire families are murdered. People are running away and again, NATO provides ...[the] response - the state of Serbia is guilty. One doesn't have to be too clever to understand what the real truth is.

NATO officials announced that leaders of Albanian political parties are murdered by [the] Serbian police. Their sudden and miraculous resurrection confuted NATO.

Some of those Albanian leaders, very much alive, escaped to near-by countries.

  • The most prominent [among the Kosovo Albanian leaders] ... Dr Ibrahim Rugova met [the] president of Serbia, applying that NATO stop killing civilians. There were no answer from the aggressor's headquarters.
  • The Pope applied that NATO suspend aggression during the Easter holiday. No answer, again...

As a response, NATO launched another lie about concentration camp at Pristina's playing-field. Foreign journalists and diplomats were there, only to find out another notorious NATO hoax.

Almost simultaneously, towns all over Yugoslavia were ruined. For the third time in 20th century the world's most powerful military force enkindles [a] bonfire which engulfs our shools, librarys, our history and roots.

More than 1000 rarest medivial manuscripts -- a part of [the] world's cultural inheritance -- disappeared in a flame here in Belgrade after destruction of Serbian National Library - at that time the largest library on Balkan. The date [was] 6 April 1941. On the same day this year an entire street were [destroyed] in a small Serbian mining town Aleksinac! Many families died under wrecks. All of them were civilians - woman, children and old married coulples. What did they do wrong? NATO admited the crime, allegedly as a "mistake".

Can enyone justify bombing the monastery at Gracanica (bulit in 1320)?

NATO's targets were untill now monasteries Rakovica (13th century), Pecka Patrijarsija (14th century) and Devic (15th century), [the] Catolik[sic] church in Novi Sad (18th cenury), [the] town-museum [of] Cetinje, [a] monument to the heroes of WW I on mountain Gucevo, [the] historical museum in Leskovac, a 400 years old bridge in Djakovica, hospitals in Belgrade, Nis, Pristina, rafinerys[sic] in Pancevo and Novi Sad, ortodox[sic] graveyard and chapel in Pristina, tobacco factorys in Vranje and Nis, ambulance[s], and [a] nursery for 500 children, [the] vacuum cleaner's factory in Cacak (bombed five times untill now), civilian bridges in Novi Sad, [a] music school....Until now, there are 190 destroyed or damaged schools and facilites. Even a ski-center and a nearby hotel at the Zlatibor mountain were destroyed.

Despite all international conventions which ban the use of such weapon[s], civilians are dieing thank's to NATO's cluster bombs (!) and depleted uranium shells. All of that is just a part of [their] "peaceful mission," acording to NATO.

Only a person with very, very low intelligence level can trust such [a] statement.

Because of everything that's happening in this part of Europe at the end of [the] 20th century, we apply to you in the name of justice and humanity to help our country by saying and writing only the truth.

The real truth is necessary not only to us - Serbs, but to the whole world. If we start a new milenium with lies, deceptions, if we allow the right of a stronger party to dictate [to] small nations the rules of life, where will that take all of us?

We'll appreciate anything - the word of aliment is precious as well as a piece of bread. ... 11 milions Yugoslavs - adults, old people and children spent last 17 days and nights in shelters and cellars expecting the voice of reason.
