Dolphins at play.I am afraid that Mr. Life now wallows in the conviction that he has to be The Main Kid on The Block of literature and we can, therefore, count on his silly stories beyond 2000. On the other hand and to be fair, I have to admit that Mr. Life is showing amazing progress in the development of his literary technique nowadays.

For example, irony.

A brilliant kick was the headline of Serbian TV news on Saturday, December 11th, where the audience learned that Mr. Milosevic, as president of Yugoslavia, sent his condolences to family of the late president of Croatia, Mr. Tudjman. We have at least 16,000 people killed in the Serbo-Croat martial episode, much more wounded and much much more dismissed from their homes, to say nothing about the bloody destruction (anybody remember Vukovar in 1991 or the Serbian towns and villages in Croatia that disappeared in the "Storm" and "Lighting" operations in Krajina a few years later?) or hate between Serbs and Croats which was carefully cultivated by regimes both in Zagreb and in Belgrade.

And to balance this heinous story, Mr. Life provides what? Mr. Tudjman was Mr. Milosevic's main partner in the disassembling of the former Yugoslavia. (Otherwise that benighted country might have survived enough to fade into the EU in a painless way. But those two fellows had the queer ambition to rule at any price). In the middle of the Serbo-Croatian (or Croat-Serbian) war, when young infatuated men were perishing with Mr. Tudjman's or Mr. Milosevic's names on their lips, in Karadjordjevo (the preserve which belonged to Marshal Tito) those two leaders led by nothing but their vanity and greed were having a friendly chat about how they would divide Bosnia.

So you see, Gentle Reader, not only can no objection be made on Mr. Life's logic in the plot, but we have to recognize his masterful way of creating scoundrel characters.

Mr. Milosevic's story is not finished yet, but speaking about the way the story of Mr. Tudjman was ended by Mr. Life, we have to identify the strong emotions provoked among readers and demand for a dose of religion even amid inveterate atheists.

Mr. Tudjman's leave-taking calls for the institution of hell, or even some new reincarnation, or we could forget everything we have learned about good and bad and only aesthetic reasons would ban us from raping old women in elevators.

But, in my opinion, the highest level of Mr. Life's literary skills ---as demonstrated in the stories he has created about the former Yugoslavia --- comes from his incessant practice on the story. I can't say that Mr. Life had no practice from creatings stories in the other parts of the world ---or that his ability to shock us with brutality wasn't shown in stories about Africa, Indonesia or Chechnia nowadays, but the last decade in Mr. Life's opus was marked with title, "Balkans."

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that an interest "Balkans" is waning in Mr. Life. Some of stories are just in the middle of the plot or at their very beginnings.

We have the story about media in Serbia, for example - an onlooker at the broadcasts of TV stations controlled by the regime could easily believe that Serbia is the best of all possible worlds with a flowering economy and growing democracy --- providing that he is tied to Serbian TV 24 hours daily and that he doesn't take step away from his flat. Some independent media sometimes dare to allow that NATO was not beaten by Serbia, but in such cases the regime has a new law about information which provides enormous penalties for those journalists who insult anybody from the ruling garniture.

Let's look more closely at how Mr. Life is employing sophisticated literary forms as he moves into the year 2000.

Horror - nobody could provide an official confirmation, but every professional accoucheur in Yugoslavia gives advice to new married pairs to avoid child-bearing during the next two years. It seems that the after effects of human bombardment by the NATO Flying Circus will lessen enough after a two year period to assure a new generation with only one head, two legs, two arms and a more or less normal number of fingers.

Comedy - although Montenegro and Serbia "de jure" still make up the Yugoslavian Federation, some people "de facto" live in different countries. Before flying from Tivat (Montenegro) to Belgrade (Serbia) passengers pass through not a domestic (non-customs, no passport check) gate but an international one. Hmmnnn.

Farce - KFOR is unable to create a multi-ethnic society in Kosovo and prevent Albanians from killing Serbs and Gypsies, but the Secretary General of NATO has declared that such sporadic incidents can't lessen the success of the international community there. (Which raises the question of whether it is only Mr. Secretary General who really thinks that a few daily, sporadic incidents of killing in Kosovo are a reasonable price in the building of World New Order --- or maybe he has spent too much time with Mr. Jamie Shea-nocchio and lost his sense of reality).

Corn - how much time will pass before everybody realizes that bombs in NATO Flying Circus were only the background for the real battle for souls being made by TV? (A very good friend of mine, a journalist from one EU country, told me that he had a video tape with frames full of Albanian civilians doing nothing in some basement. Then he heard voiceover which said: "OK, everybody, let us see some crying now". And Albanian civilians cried. This journalist was instructed to cut the beginning of the tape, and the offending voiceover, and broadcast only the crying.)

As I have said, Mr. Life creates his stories in other parts of Europe too, but they are not so full of spice as those ones from the former Yugoslavia, albeit some pearls could be found in other works from time to time.

Here's an example:

A high Turkish politician said that Turkey should become part of European Union at last because the Turkish people are Europeans and have been for 600 years. I am curious now to hear the reaction from the USA. If the USA supports Turkey, the precedent will be made, and Americans (excluding Indians) will have the moral right to feel themselves at home in America after 2092.

What more is there to say about Mr. Life and about the stories he creates on the very end of 1999? Only that I would be much more happy if his works would have less ugly plot elements in the year 2000 and beyond..... even if that meant use of less sophisticated literary techniques.
