AMERICAN DREAMS: Plenty of smirking pundits on the Right and hand-wringing whiners on the Left have been asking, "Whither liberalism?" Indeed, actual liberalism has been pretty much AWOL for years. Besides the occasional liberal who makes it to the national level --- Senator Paul Wellstone, for instance --- most so-called "liberals" are simply late model stealth conservatives with a slick PR kit and the knowledge of which politically correct clichÈ to spout. The most prominent example is, of course, Bill Clinton ... conservatives have a tighter grip on reality: they regularly cry that Clinton "takes away" their issues such as crime, welfare, trade agreements, etc. And they're right: President Bill is rarely outflanked on the Right, by anyone....STEVE VIVIAN "Lies on the Left, Lies on the Right"
DAY ONE: In Britain the issue [of homosexuality] has come to the fore again because the Government is seeking to reverse a pernicious legislative clause which forbade education authorities to "promote" homosexuality. The ferocious debate that is going on is not, of course, about promoting anything, it is about the public tolerance of private behaviour....KEVIN CAREY "EVEREST"
G21 EUROPE: The Western press has devoted columns to Haider's praise of the Waffen SS, and of Hitler's employment policies. However, very little has been mentioned of the fact that those statements were made several years ago, he has since back-tracked on what he said then, and that not only are his immigration policies third or fourth down on the Freedom Party's priority list, but that they are not too different from several of Austria'sCentre Right Party's policies. When Haider suggested that Churchill was a war criminal because of his part in the bombing of Dresden, every British tabloid stepped up the analogies to Hitler.... POWERSSOUND: The Grim Reaper has been far too busy of late, decimating the jazz ranks at what seems like a furious pace. Just in the last few months, Milt Jackson, Art Farmer and Grover Washington Jr. have departed this mortal coil. Replacing such giants wont be an easy task. But thank goodness, these gentlemen have left behind recordings that should continue to amaze and amuse their fans for many years into the future....BOB POWERS "Good Ones Passing On"
PLANETARY MADNESS: We slide and glide farther out into infinite Pisces. Escapism prevails; isolation yens yank at the depths of the psyche. Cloisters of nuns, gaggles of monks, dens of vice, and prisoners, petty and heinous, are Piscean realms. The fringes of existence winkÝ and wave their fingers come-hitherly (and sacredly)....... IRISH EYES: In an average year, at least 75-80% of legislation [on Northern Ireland] was concentrated in the House, and more House members tended to sponsor or co-sponsor legislation. Almost every Northern Ireland issue under the sun was acted upon by certain Congressional members: human rights concerns, the Hunger Strikes, the use of plastic bullets, proposals for a special envoy to Northern Ireland, the MacBride Principles, and the ongoing peace process. Unfortunately, very few of these bills or resolutions passed, and up until the last several years many well-meaning initiatives died a legislative death.... MEMOIRS OF THE INFORMATION AGE: Whilst reading through a renewal notice for my household insurance policy recently I happened to notice that my television set would be replaced immediately if anything happened to it, since it is considered a necessity. This surprised me somewhat as I have never thought I couldn't live without a TV, even if I would prefer not to have to test that theory. This got me to thinking, what constitutes a necessity and what are the things that I consider a necessary to maintain my way of life? Top of the list was my computer... Her rich traditions, culture, heritage, history, mythology, religious sentiments & scientific temper makes her unite. There is a lot to discover from the soul of India. MY GLASS HOUSE: But I have never picked my friends based on what other people thought of them, nor have I allowed my friends to influence the value I found in my friends and relationships.
There is one Truth I have always been aware of: there is a little Nazi inside each of us.
Not so much in the sense that we can be filled with hatred and want to hurt and destroy other people --- but more in the sense that we are all judgmental, cruel, and totally capable of inflicing pain on the people around us.... ROD AMIS "The Shape of My Heart"
