EVENT 213: WE LIKE THE FUNK

TODAY'S RDR. AL DUNSMUIR provides a Special Report on the May Day demonstrations in London. "The Sadness of London" PLUS Our Pick of the Day.
MEMOIRS OF THE INFORMATION AGE: Having toured a number of the Linux sites and forums, I am under the distinct impression that, considering that most Linux devotees are professional or semi-professional computer users, they are having one hell of a time. I think, on a percentage basis, Joe Q. Public, with his/her 10.6 years of schooling and seventh grade reading literacy, is enjoying much more uptime with their Windows and Mac PCs than these "pros". Why? Standardization(and Joe Q.'s resistance to fixing something that ain't broke.;O) Standardization of parts(and code IS a PART of an operating system), is what made the industrial revolution really rock. Freely interchangeable parts, uniform parts, parts that worked without a lot of technical knowledge in comparison to the task at hand. I am shocked that computer professionals would reject such a basic part of what they enjoy about 'puters: the consistency and standardization. ED CANTARELLA "Free Dumb"

PLANETARY MADNESS: Taurus is instinctively drawn to earthly delights - indulge your inner debauchee. Taurus is warm for giving form to one's personal "values" (rather than sculpting mass moral hysteria). Whether one has a penchant for religious icons or for latex dominatrix hoods, Taurus beseeches us to create or acquire forms that depict personal "values." ...JENNIFER BLUE "MAY, 2000"

CARTOONS BY GASPIRTZ: A droll sense of humor, a twist of fate. OLIVER GASPIRTZ.

DAY ONE: British Prime Minister Blair was the first Western leader to visit President-elect Putin in Moscow and Blair was Putin's first host after his election. They chatted for over three hours about vodka and whiskey sales before Putin went for tea with the Queen on his way home. A small return, you would have thought, for all the opprobrium heaped on Blair for meeting the "Butcher of Grozny". KEVIN CAREY "Vodka Diplomacy"

Passive Resistance

AL DUNSMUIR

The Zimbabwean problem must be pretty bad. On Friday the 28th April, the British Government announced, after talks with Zimbabwean delegates, that the ball was in their court; the British Government could compromise no more. When the old colonial rulers, legally and morally committed to help land reform, and always willing to compromise as any Northern Irish political Party can testify, says enough is enough, then you know the other side is being a bit stubborn. And there is no one more stubborn than President Mugabe.

The British Government is not being unreasonable. In 1980 it said it would fund land redistribution provided certain conditions were met first. These included that democracy and a rule of law existed in Zimbabwe, and that land went to those who needed or deserved it, and not to cronies of the President. Now, more than ever, that remains a necessity. However hard the Zimbabwean Ministers try, the British will not budge from these pre-conditions and nor should they. Mugabe may step up his propaganda campaign against the British, but the fact remains, the ball is now in his court. Africa must find a solution to Africa's problem.

ROD AMIS

Grace Slick photo.Last week I was on the road a lot, Columbia, Washington (D.C.), New York City. I saw both my sister-in-law from Bermuda, who gave me a wonderful book by her brother, Christopher, about the "Belief Factor" in the white supremacy ideology and how it arises from a religious model, and my platonic lover, Barbara. It was a good, if hectic, week.

My G3 laptop arrived, too. I took it out of the box this weekend and was also so distracted I couldn't come out and play with you.

And now we have May Day celebrations/actions/teach-ins. Man! It is really starting to smell like the '60s again...

A push button link.RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT: G21: Are you primarily hoping that a demonstration opposing Third World Debt is witnessed by the other G7 nations?

Steve: Yeah, I hope the capitalists in America take note and realise they can't screw the rest of the world much longer. I want this Government to stop trying to serve the US economy.

G21: But Gordon Brown (Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer) is the only G7 Chancellor who openly supports the cancellation of Third World Debt. Clare Short (Britain's Secretary for International Development) gave more aid to victims of the Mozambique floods and has campaigned more vigorously than any other Western Statesman for the Debt to be cancelled. Shouldn't you be supporting this Government as it tries to put pressure on the rest of the industrialised world to follow suit?

Steve: But this Government is just a puppet of the US economy.

G21: But what about what I just said? AL DUNSMUIR "The Sadness of London"

RDR 04.28.00: Ending our spiritual considerations this week, we thought a spot of fiction would be in order. From the Harry Trotter novel, "QUIET WORLDS" Chapter 7.

RDR 05.01.00: Is mental illness what was called "demonic possession?" How much can we give for our friends and lovers? ROD AMIS "Legion"

RDR 05.02.00:JOHN MCGINNIS responds to Ed Cantarella's MOIA article. We encourage OPED at this site. "Paid Smart"
