EVENT 214: THE OTHER EVIL EMPIRE

TODAY'S RDR. ED CANTARELLA takes a walk "In the Garden of Hope & Greed" PLUS Our Pick of the Day.
DAY ONE: In the matter of Microsoft products I am by no means indifferent. First, and fundamentally, the software licensing system, exploited so skilfully, is pernicious. Secondly, the combination of the near monopoly and the upgrade treadmill are expensive. Thirdly, the products are not very good. Finally, though, the thing that makes me most dislike the good people of Redmond is the system's nasty habit of informing me after an absence of ten minutes or so that I have performed an "illegal operation". KEVIN CAREY "The Breakup"

MEMOIRS OF THE INFORMATION AGE: Part of any corporate job is dealing with the politics. I have known that most of my life. Still I find it interesting to watch the political moves around me and analyze motivations. ROD AMIS "The Handshake That Hides the Snake"

RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT: The firing of my intern was the cap to a week that had left me feeling an awful lot like "a dirty capitalist." I took a shot at the Open Source movement; the responses indicate my message barely registered, good, bad or otherwise. I started kicking at the free distribution of music and other copy written works and was completely shot down by everyone I discussed it with, e.g., "Are you crazy, you want to pay for that stuff?", " that stuff should be free, people put it out there so it can be taken." and "yeah, why don't they stop charging $15 for a shiny piece of plastic(CD)?" I then read Al Dunsmuir's article regarding the May Day protests in London. To me it seems that there is a big connection, currently out of balance, between information and work, leading to a shortage of Hope... ED CANTARELLA "In The Garden of Hope & Greed"

RDR 05.11.00: RON DIENER follows up with "The Monopoly & The Virus."

RDR 05.08.00: ED CANTARELLA talks about the ILOVEYOU virus. "Love & Mr. Clean"

RDR 05.03.00: AL DUNSMUIR provides a Special Report on the May Day demonstrations in London. "The Sadness of London"

PLANETARY MADNESS: Taurus is instinctively drawn to earthly delights - indulge your inner debauchee. Taurus is warm for giving form to one's personal "values" (rather than sculpting mass moral hysteria). Whether one has a penchant for religious icons or for latex dominatrix hoods, Taurus beseeches us to create or acquire forms that depict personal "values." ...JENNIFER BLUE "MAY, 2000"

CARTOONS BY GASPIRTZ: A droll sense of humor, a twist of fate. OLIVER GASPIRTZ.

MY GLASS HOUSE: I can't remember when things were as turbulent in my life as they are right now. I wish I had a crystal ball to tell me what the next part of this adventure will be. Back to California? Perhaps. ROD AMIS "No Title"

ROD AMIS

Though I certainly share Al Dunsmuir's disappointment with the May Day results in London and their failure to live up to the standards set in Seattle and Washington, D.C., I saw many signs of hope on May Day. From Turkey to South Korea to San Francisco there were many peaceful, well-organized and -articulated gatherings that did focus on important issues like the amelioration of "Third World" debt and the destructive strictures of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. More importantly, millions of people took to the streets around the globe to say no to American-style hyper-capitalism. What that said to me is that the Big Lie is fooling less people than our "spin doctors" want to believe. People are beginning to see that we need a new community of dissidents.

G21 Update.
SIDEBAR: The day after we ran this essay "The Newshour with Jim Lehrer" has a special report on poverty in the celebrated Silicon Valley by Spencer Michels. Which you can find here.
What that said to me is that despite the arrogant and hypocritical stance taken by the American corporate elite (who control many of the world's multi-nationals today) many people aren't being fooled. Much akin to that of a philandering husband, an apt metaphor under America's current Administration, they are saying to the world: "Are you gonnah believe me or your lying eyes?"

ROBERT HAMILL: THREE YEARS ON IN THE QUEST FOR JUSTICE

DAN VANDEMORTEL

"I am black. I live in Alabama and the year is 1962. Please remember this statement as I explain what has happened to my family."

One year ago, these words were delivered in Washington, D.C. not by a victim of the African-American struggle for civil rights, but by the soft yet steady voice of Diane Hamill of Portadown, Northern Ireland. The forum was the Rayburn House Office Building, at a House International Relations hearing into the past, present, and future of Northern Ireland policing. A veritable "who's who" of human rights experts, Irish-knowledgeable Congressmen, domestic and foreign journalists, and political activists were in attendance.

Somehow my radar telescope has overlooked the career of Jesse Davis. This masterful performer on the alto saxophone deserves lots more attention than he's received over a career that stretches back for six previous albums, all on the Concord label.

Davis launched his career as a leader in 1991 and has been cookin' ever since. His latest, "Second Nature," shows a distinguished artist at home with his horn and at ease with the demands of today's modern jazz. This set was recorded last June in Verona, Italy. Working in support of Davis were Massimo Farao, piano; Massimo "Max" Dallomo, drums, and Aldo Zunino, bass.
