EVENT 218: MOJO

TODAY'S RDR. ROD AMIS on "The Invisible Poor." PLUS Our Pick of the Day.
RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT: I don't honestly believe that most Americans lack compassion. I still believe that people are basically good at heart. The new tricknology, as far as I'm concerned, is that contact with the poor has been taken away. "The Invisible Poor" ROD AMIS

RDR 06.01.00: "What Price Diversity" - AL DUNSMUIR on last week's atrocity in Spain.

RDR 06.05.00: ROD AMIS asserts that even the American Way of war may be mostly a myth. "Evil Empire II"

RDR 06.07.00: RADIO RAHEEM looks at the Preacher's Kids. "House of the Spirit"

MY GLASS HOUSE: I used to complain to my wife that every dime I had made as a "serious writer" had come from my work as a journalist, while my fiction languished, faced constant rejection slips, and how much that frustrated me. Famed literary agent Scott Meredith took me under contract for two years while sending me the warning, "Rod, literary merit does not equal commercial success in our country."

So now, as The Writer troubles my sleep, battles for his Voice to be heard again, as he throws new characters at me piecemeal, I cringe.... ROD AMIS "MOJO"

DAY ONE: The day after newspaper pictures appeared of a teenage boy in Sierra Leone carrying what appeared to be a British supplied rifle, the British Government reacted by confirming its support for the legitimate Government of Sierra Leone but said it would only supply arms on condition that they were not issued to children under the age of 18. The hard pressed Government accepted the preconditions with the quality of enthusiasm that only accompanies the absurdity of compliance.

My reaction to this was that arms suppliers specifying the age of soldiers wasn't very different from Pope Innocent III forbidding the use of the crossbow.... KEVIN CAREY "NICOMACHEAN ETHICS"

CARTOONS BY GASPIRTZ: A droll sense of humor, a twist of fate. OLIVER GASPIRTZ.

PLANETARY MADNESS: Gemini not only sees at least two sides of a situation, Gemini can also be at least two sides of a situation. Embrace duality; raise an eyebrow at duplicity. Decision-making breeds during the season of the Twins as if to taunt, tease and otherwise screw-with the dialectical inclinations of this sign. Seize the Gemini energy for versatility, adaptability and landing on your feet...JENNIFER BLUE "JUNE, 2000"

Letters from Chechnya (3)

RENDT GORTER

"We brought the old Russian lady from next door with us. I have known her all my life. Ah, she used to carry my books when she walked me to school. And she's got no-one else to help her. Of course she couldn't stay at the mosque, what with her being Christian. We asked everywhere for help, but there were a lot of people fleeing to Ingushetia then already. I found Dusha, you know the one that cooked for you here in Nazran, and she took us to the church. The priest wasn't there but the man in charge helped. But they had a lot of people already staying there."

The words came without interruption. Intermittently her hand would tug at her headscarf or brush nervously across her face. But her story had no end.

Big Money Sport

THOMAS HART

Until the dang "elections" (picture Dr. Evil doing the four finger thang) starts up after the conventions this summer, ya'll got to admit that this is the most ho-hum Presidential election year in a long time. Funny, it's the most expensive, too. Could it be that the average American people know that we are no longer part of the electoral process? Could it be that we know for sure that we are just meant to be spectators in another Big Money sport? That why I feels like I got the short end of the stick when being assigned Political Coverage this year. The best political stories are comin' outtah New Yawk.... where they don't even know how to make good salsa.

Meanwhile, down here in Tejas, we care more about Ms. Anna Kournikova on the cover of Sports Illustrated, John Travolta's $180 million bomb at the box office, and how come it's so hard to get our kids into see "Dinosaurs."

Why E-Commerce Died

BILL STEVENS

Perhaps it is not so much that e-commerce died, upon reflection, as that the Internet was meant to be a communications medium. Our prime motivation for coming to the Internet is to e-mail our friends and relatives, to find information (which includes some forms of entertainment,) and after that we might just buy something. That's why I think the dot.com era was over-valuated, over-hyped, and is approaching its end as a dominating force here.
