EVENT 221: PUT ON YOUR SAILIN' SHOES

TODAY'S RDR. ED CANTARELLA gives us a test in "GRACE: The Final Frontier." PLUS Our Pick of the Day and a new Reader Poll.
G21 NEWS: As is usual in the course of such meetings, various heads of administration stood up in turn. Each made a plea for why the little assistance that was going around should reach their localities first. But then the soldier, Valya, also stood up. He made a call for help on behalf of the residents of the remote Vedeno mountain district where he was based. And he did so with an eloquence and conviction that embarrassed us all with our inability to be able to respond....RENDT GORTER "Letters from Chechnya" - More -

RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT: Professor Drucker stated in a recent speech entitled Managing Oneself, "..it is not the Internet, it is not e-commerce. It is an unprecedented change in the human condition... ED CANTARELLA - More -

DAY ONE: Anyone coming to Britain this Summer or dipping into (Heaven forbid) the Web site of a British Newspaper will be puzzled to discover the massive media (if not popular) interest in the prospect of legislation to ban fox hunting. The subject has run steadily, if somewhat elusively like Reynard himself, through politics for a quarter of a century without being resolved and it both frightens and fascinates (as most problems do) the Government of Mr. Tony Blair.... CARTOONS BY GASPIRTZ: A droll sense of humor, a twist of fate. OLIVER GASPIRTZ.

PLANETARY MADNESS: Gemini not only sees at least two sides of a situation, Gemini can also be at least two sides ofa situation. Embrace duality; raise an eyebrow at duplicity....JENNIFER BLUE "JUNE, 2000"

POWERSSOUND: In conducting a survey of the best musicians on Earth, Chick Corea would certainly receive a bundle of votes. But he's thought more of a band leader than as a pianist. However, those who see Corea as the head man of the group Origin may be persuaded to alter their opinion of this gifted musician after listening to his brand new two-disc set..... VOX POPULI: From Ed C., Pontiac, MI, USA:

.... Something about fatherhood that I have wanted to write about or comment on for a while, was a comment made by actor Bruce Willis, regarding guys leaving their wives whom they have kids with, just so they can go shack up with some younger honey{paraphrase},"Yeah, mix up the gene pool". ... - More -

"Fraternity"

ED CANTARELLA

My paternal grandfather came to America, from Sicily, in 1918 with only a fourth grade education and about $25.00. This was money he had saved from the two years of backbreaking work as a fieldhand. He knew no English, but with his small body, stunted from malnutrition and the repeated bouts of tapeworm infestation he had suffered, he resumed toiling away in this strange new land. Something that always seemed mysterious (and stupid to me, as a teenager), was his disdain for the members of the local Italian-American club. Gramps' response when I asked him why he didn't associate with them like so many others, was: "They justa wanta be Italians - I'm a American Cit-zen".

When I was a kid, I was presented with the mystery of fraternal organizations, particularly Freemasons. A boy I sometimes played with would leave with his father on the same day, every week, so he could attend DeMolay. What is it? I would ask him.

"It's nothing really, we just talk about the Creator and America and stuff like that. It's something just for the kids of Masons, so they can prepare to become Masons when they are older." Hmmm?

2000 Congressional Scorecard

NORTHERN IRELAND ALERT - Special to the G21

Map of Ireland.San Francisco - The human rights organization Northern Ireland Alert today issued its third annual Northern Ireland Congressional Scorecard and called for the defeat in the next relevant election of the following Congresspersons due to their lack of interest in Northern Ireland, a primary United States foreign policy initiative:

Uninterested - Senators - -Representatives

Chenoweth-Hage, Helen (R-ID) - -Paul, Ron (R-TX) - - -Cox, Christopher (R-CA) - -Taylor, Gene (D-MS) - - -Hostettler, John (R-IN)

The scorecard, which records actions taken by both the House of Representatives and the Senate, ranks Congressional members on 23 activities taken from January 1999 through January, 2000. Categories of action include involvement in the peace process, expressions of concern pertaining to human rights abuses, sponsorship of pending Irish-related resolutions and bills, calls for release or leniency regarding political prisoners, and encouragement of Irish cultural concerns.

Human Capital

ROD AMIS

Most of what I have been writing about, over the last few years when I became a designated "Internet pundit" over at Andover.net, has been about the concerns of managing human capital on a global scale. I've talked about what it means to be a contractor, a telecommuter, and a member of the Information Society who works outside of cube farms and office towers.

That has put me in a unique position to analyse the effects of these technologies as they evolve and reach some unsettling conclusions...
