EVENT # 263: DESTINATION: ANYWHERE

"Destination: Anywhere!
East or West, I don't care...
"

That tune seems appropriate for our publisher's plans to take us (ANYWHERE!) and the magazine (ANYWHERE!) this summer. We hope you'll stick around for the ride. It promises to be another doozy.

Enjoy the latest feast!

"I'm like a bird
I'm gonnah fly away
I don't know where my soul is
I don't know where my home is

SUBJECT: Dogs Across America

Rod, I've always enjoyed reading Ron Diener's very real take on life in America, but had to write this time because "Dogs" was exceptionally good. Thanks for allowing him the extended space to tell this story.

Is there a book in the works from this?

Keep up the great work!

Not a single one of her favorite Congressmen had come in for their regular whippings; they were all in the House chamber today, voting to cut taxes for lottery winners, children of rich industrialists, gangsters, and other people more deserving than the few Americans still silly enough to work for a living.... We're at the Coast of Sierra Leone. The weather is like steam rising from a boiling kettle. Pores are open, and sweat is welcome. Unlike cooler places where sweat has the flavor of something fermented, here, it is the sheen of every limb. Sweat is only a perfume when fresh, free-flowing. It is the only air-conditioner that works.

Cold things, iced things are silly here. They just give you the false illusion that you are chilled, before heat overwhelms you with a venegence. .. More

KEVIN CAREY

As Holy Week and Easter are the most important time of year for me when I try not to become too involved in current affairs, here is a story which might shed some light on the issue of social capital.

Photo of a frustrated woman. One of our current, minor obsessions is "Plane rage" which is generally attributed to excessive alcohol and inadequate leg room. Well, on my way back to London from Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago I had a severe bout of it before the first drinks were served and even though I had a bulk-head seat. I had quite enough leg room but my neighbour overflowed substantially into my limited space; he could not keep still and used his elbows liberally; he had a slight cold which caused him to sneeze regularly but he apparently knew nothing of handkerchiefs and followed each hefty sneeze with an equally hefty sniff. In spite of all these inconveniences I finally slept, only to be awakened by his head set, turned up at full volume, occupying his vacated seat... More

THE NOW EDITION

MY GLASS HOUSE: : The confusion about what day this column would come out this past week had everything to do with my own personal confusion these days. I had meant to make Thursday's update the last for this edition, but I simply wasn't up to it. (Readers of RDR will have noted that already.)

While trying to regain my own life, you see, I have been mired in its inconsistences. Tough circumstances demanding my attention and the looming deadline of my escape from this benighted burgh have distracted me from the tasks at hand. Money worries sap my soul. Finally, around Wednesday, I found myself throwing up my hands. It was as if I were lying down on the surface of the ocean of life and just letting the on-coming waves buffet me for awhile..."Lying Down" ROD AMISMore

RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT: : I find that I need to be able to empty my mind in order to focus on putting out a new edition of this Web magazine and today I couldn't really accomplish that. First there was a court appearance attendant to my on-going penury. (Yes, it's come to that.) Mike called from California to see if I had heard from the Brits. Dmitri sends a copy of a report from the Quebec protests. More queries came in and story samples. I just couldn't get focused. I used the travel and waiting time to pick up Valdas Anelasuskas's wonderful, fact-filled Discovering America As It Is again. That begged for attention and corrolation of facts to fuel a new policy essay some time soon..."Achieving an Empty Mind" ROD AMIS More

Our sprite image.RDR 04.23.01: ROD AMIS takes a walk with the Prejudice Institute's Howard Ehrlich and speaks on "Lessons from the Anarchists"

RDR 04.18.01: KEVIN CAREY says US Attorney General Ashcroft is setting a bad precedent. "Death TV"

AMERICAN DREAMS:

3

A waving American Flag. The bus from Denver had just arrived as we were ascending to our seats in the Salt Lake City bus, heading down Interstate 80 across Wyoming. Several people came bounding out of the other bus, as though we would not be waiting to board them had they not made fools of themselves. It was obvious that we would no longer have the large number of empty seats for riding comfort. The bus would be almost full with all these new passengers.

People fussed with their packages and seating as the strangers boarded, hoping against hope that no one would take the vacant aisle seat next to him or her. To no avail. The bus would be full minus two passengers..."Dogs Across America - Part 3 of 3" RON DIENER More

POWERSSOUND: Let me recommend several new albums from the dependable New Earth Records. As I write this, my ears are being caressed by the solemn but stirring music of a group called Tya (an aboriginal word meaning "the earth" The group's leader, Martin Scherl, writes in the album notes that the inspiration for the album came "from a stay in Australia and a deep experience of the Aboriginal culture." [Hear a RealAudio clip of Tya's music by following the link.]

The music may transport you to other dimensions, as it did me. It's so refreshing to come across music that's different yet soothing to one's nervous system. Not quite so ethereal, James Asher plays drums with a deft touch in "Feet in the Soil Vol. 2." The original release was a worldwide best seller, according to the record company. ...
