Joni Mitchell Jazzed

BOB POWERS

Cover of David Lahm CD.David Lahm had a great idea when he decided to do an album of jazz versions of the songs of rock icon Joni Mitchell. The first album showed how intricate and complicated Mitchell could be in her music. We already knew how mesmerizing her lyrics could be. Separating the music from those special words demonstrates, as if anyone didn't already know, that Joni Mitchell deserves all those rave reviews and sales over the course of her fascinating and lengthy career.

"More Jazz Takes on Joni Mitchell" (Arkadia Records) is one of those productions that only gets better the longer you keep it on your turntable... More

Taiwan's African Blunders

STEVE CROOK

G21 Asia logo. The United Nations' confirmation of a travel ban on senior Liberian officials, including the country's president, Charles Taylor, was reported on the front page of the Taipei Times, one of Taiwan's English-language newspapers. The article, however, did not remind readers that Taylor's last overseas trip was to Taiwan, where in March he was accorded full honors, including a 21-gun salute, and thanked for the political support he has given the island.

Earlier this month, when the China Post reported that the Committee to Protect Journalists had announced its Enemies of the Press list -- with Charles Taylor making the top ten for the first time -- no mention was made of Taylor's friendly ties with Taiwan... More

Constant Ruthlessness

KEVIN CAREY

Democracy is built upon the necessary myth that politicians ought to behave like patrician rulers of old but it is a matter of extreme regret that they never do. The term used for such high-minded behaviour as is supposed to have been demonstrated on a more or less continual basis in the golden age is "Statesmanship". Needless to say, this golden age never took place. The only reason why the Roman Republic is still held in such high esteem by the misty-eyed classes is that the records of its day-to-day skulduggery were not as well documented as the acts of subsequent Emperors. History also shows that such statesmen as we are supposed to have found only achieved such status late in life after careers of constant ruthlessness of the sort we are supposed to regret; just think of Henry Kissinger... RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT: : The word "posh" comes from the acronym used for the best cruise ship accomodations for British travelers going to India during the time of the raj: Port Over, Starboard Home. It's easy to think of that word posh when lounging on Front Street in Hamilton, Bermuda.

Front Street, Hamilton, is prime time for the tourist trade in Bermuda. Shops and travel agencies line the landward side of the street and cruise ships come here to dock. WhenI attended the Harbour Night celebration with Rudell there were two cruise ships. Today (21 May) Celebrity Cruise Lines' darling is docked across the street. The American accent is ubiquitous here. ..."Your Average POSH" ROD AMIS More

SUBJECT: Bon Journey!

Rod,

Wow! I think this move/travel is going to be good for you. The past two Glass Houses have been the most upbeat writing by you in a long - too long - while.

I had to chuckle and shake my head at one throw away line about an almost 50 year old running home to momma... It put things in perspective. I now have the 27 year old back in the house (for a short time only damnit!) again. ...More

MY GLASS HOUSE: : WARWICK, BERMUDA - 15 May, 2001 - I landed in Bermuda slightly before noon today and it was immediately the sense of the new-but-familiar I expected. Walking down from the plane on the metal stairway, the pastel airport building, the cerulean blue water all around one. When I arrived at my brother's house, my mother, her surviving sister and my uncle were seated around the dining room table. We kissed and I was directed to take my bags down the hallway to the back bedroom. The first thing my mother asked me was if I was hungry...."Paradise Regained" ROD AMIS More
