This week's G21 World Tour comes to you LIVE FROM SERBIA. We are the guests of DRAGAN & DRAGANA VICANOVIC in the beautiful capital, Belgrade. Belgrade is a place full of history, two rivers (the Danube and the Sava,) and celebrations on Monday, 26 June, as the Serbian water polo team won the European finals. Dragan is Editor of the popular magazine THIRD EYE, which recently celebrated its 300th edition. He's also a big fan of the great Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla and devoted to history.

The Democratic DeficitKEVIN CAREYJust as poverty in extreme cold always seems much worse than poverty in extreme heat, so pointless violence in Lutheran-chic Gothenburg somehow seems worse than a riot in a polyglot metropolis. The idea of Swedish policemen being forced to use their guns in self-defence was as odd as policemen in Chicago not doing so.
Ostensibly, the demonstrators were protesting against the capitalist conspirators of the European Union (EU.) They were not, let it be noted, demonstrating against the presence of what one commentator described as the "Global village idiot" who had left for Poland. They were, instead, in a collectively anarchistic show of disarray, objecting to the very people who had just chided Bush for his behaviour over the Kyoto Protocol and the military-industrial complex. ... This is what comes of flying by the seat of your pants. London, like any other town, is a depressing place to be broke. Most of all, when you are saying that you are merely passing through, what nags is the embarassment that comes as you suspect people no longer believe your assurances that your cash is on the way. Though you do nothing to indicate it, they act as if you are pulling a scam and have no intention of moving on.
You can feel the pressure of them wondering what's wrong with you and why don't you just leave.... More

VOX POPULI: From Yona R., San Francisco, CA, USA:
SUBJECT: the mother thang rod, at least you went thru the mother thang... it's behind you now. the f2f experience will remind you of what really was/is... make a firmer boundary between what is and what has become imaginary demons. i say imaginary not because they don't exist, but because the realm they exist in is inside you... for your eyes only to a certain extent. anyways, congradulations on your graduation to true adulthood. though i too always expected more from my parent, once i saw him for who he truly was and saw myself in the presense of who he was, i knew he could never hurt me (like that) again. thank the gauds a million times for rudell. she is truly a gift from them to you. see somebody loves you. i am envious of your interesting journey. in all of scotland, the greatest thing for me was the graveyard near the st andrews golf course, with centuries of corpses and spirits layed to rest at the gates of the great north sea. the mixtures of emotions rendered me wordless.... one of my favorites places to be.. take great care with yourself....

I am predisposed to like Ellroy. I was born in 1950's LA, and when Ellroy riffs on the cultural minutae of that time and place, he's jacking direct to my psyche. The streets, the hoods and cops that ran them, the bush league celebs that jostled each other for face-time on magazine covers and movie posters, all resonate in my brainbox like a Bernard Hermann film score. My mom kept a dog-eared collection of Confidential magazines stashed under her bed, and I gleeped them and glommed them whenever I had the chance, wolfing down stories of mary jane busts and movie stars clinched with pool boys and doxies with the wrong skin tones.... RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT: : BELGRADE - 25 June, 2001 - So much of the story of Serbia is a story of the distortion of history. I first began to learn that when Dragana Vicanovic began reporting for The World's Magazine during the NATO bombing. So much of what we reported (later vindicated by the BBC, and Newsweek magazine, among others) ran counter to the propaganda provided about that war.
We lost readership at the time for reporting the truth.
Two weeks ago I spoke with Lionel Rolfe, the son of Yaltah Menuhin, about a conversation he had had with Lady Muriel Turner. Lady Turner is a Labour MP in the British House of Lords. She had been discussing with Lionel how the reports of Serbs working for the Nazis in World War II was another historical lie. It had been the Serbs who lost their lives protecting Jews from the Nazis, hiding them, and often ending in concentration camps themselves for their resistance. Like me, she and Lionel could only marvel that the Big Lie was rewriting everything we knew to be the truth... "Tesla's Dreams" ROD AMIS More
The Serengeti migration has nothing on Eastlands at rush hour. Eastlands is where the mwananchi (man on the street) lives. There is a whole ocean of people, moving like time has run out on them. A mish-mash of informal traders colour the streets with their wares. Eastlands has taken on a distinctly Middle-Eastern persona since half of Somalia and Ethiopia resettled here. There are bazaars, shops advertising henna, bui-bui -clad women, and lots of miraa (khat) on sale. There is a beauty parlour whose sign shows Mickey Mouse having his hands hennaed.
I am here because I am bored. Since I came back home four months ago, I have found my feelings for Kenyans somewhat barren. Everybody I know is 10 years older and conversations revolve around diapers and the size of cellphones... "Jago of Mathare Valley" BINYAVANGA WAINAINA More
