The MemorialKEVIN CAREYOn our way to Gluck's Orpheo Ed Euridice -- a subject to which I may well return in the August days of little news -- my wife and I deliberately made a detour to Trafalgar Square in Central London to look at a new piece of sculpture by the now-famous Rachel Whiteread. Entitled "Plinth," it was an inverse in transparent resin of the empty granite plinth on which it stood.
As you walked round it you could either see things through it or reflected on its inner and/or outer planes. Sometimes it was steely, sometimes glassy, occasionally mossy or blue. It was an oddly lively piece of sculpture amidst the, mostly military, dead who stood on the other plinths. ... More

This Pull-down Menu will hyperjump you to all our great features. Try it! Coming HomeBINYAVANGA WAINAINAThe Nandi woman still rules the corridor. After 10 years, I can still move about with ease in the dark. I stop at that hollow place, the bit of wall on the other side of the fireplace. My mother's voice echos in the corridor.Ý None of us have her voice. If crystal was water solidified, her voice would be the last splash of water before becoming solid. My stomach lurches with missing her. Yet I am home.
Light from the kitchen brings the Nandi woman to life. Rings on her anklesÝ and bells on her nose, she will make music wherever she goes... More

RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT: : Nobody who has read my columns can think for an instant that I am a supporter of deposed President Milosevic of the remains of Tito's Yugoslavia. Sadly, I have to make this introductory reminder because partisanship is always assumed to be the prime motive for any argument in favour or against a course of action or a retrospective analysis.
The world rejoices because Mr. Milosevic has been handed over -- the legalities are so doubtful as to rule out the word "extradited" -- to the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague. He is the first head of state, President Pinochet having got off on a technicality when in Britain, to have been accorded such treatment... "Tainted Justice" KEVIN CAREY More

SUBJECT: the mother thang rod, at least you went thru the mother thang... it's behind you now. the f2f experience will remind you of what really was/is... make a firmer boundary between what is and what has become imaginary demons. i say imaginary not because they don't exist, but because the realm they exist in is inside you... for your eyes only to a certain extent. anyways, congradulations on your graduation to true adulthood. though i too always expected more from my parent, once i saw him for who he truly was and saw myself in the presense of who he was, i knew he could never hurt me (like that) again. thank the gauds a million times for rudell. she is truly a gift from them to you. see somebody loves you. i am envious of your interesting journey. in all of scotland, the greatest thing for me was the graveyard near the st andrews golf course, with centuries of corpses and spirits layed to rest at the gates of the great north sea. the mixtures of emotions rendered me wordless.... one of my favorites places to be.. take great care with yourself....
