Updated: MONDAY, 16 JULY, 2001 (GMT)* EVENT # 273: THE BIG EASY |
The G21 World Tour moves to New Orleans, Louisiana -- that Crescent City that is attached to America by a very thin umbilical -- this week. We'll bring you various images of the city along the way, as we determine if this is the place we'll call "home" for a while or whether we'll keep pushing forward.
Don't panic; we don't intend to make another move for a week or two. World travelling is an exhausting business. Pricey, too! Meanwhile, it was a triumphant week for the Chinese. They get the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and they are chuffed! Congrats to them. NEXT UPDATE SCHEDULED MONDAY, 23 JULY Today's Pick . Another page will be displayed tomorrow. |

Africa 2001: The AUDAVID HISCOCKThe final Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit ended (WednesdaY, 11 July) with the decision to transform itself into a stronger African Union (AU). The AU is modelled along the lines of the European Union (EU) and will focus on economic development, good governance and the rule of law, eliminating conflicts and poverty, and fighting pandemics such as HIV-AIDS.
The AU will work toward conflict prevention and resolution, restore and maintain economic stability, promote human rights and democracy. In return for these efforts, it hopes the developed world will provide material support for peacekeeping, accelerate debt reduction for heavily indebted countries, increase spending on aid to at least 0.7% of GDP for each developed country, and admit African goods to its markets ... But we don't know it yet. We are secure, successful, on top of the publishing world. Or so we believe. Even as the U.S. Supreme Court is deciding the presidential election for us. We are winners --- or so we believe.
Gathered in a large enough quantity in a hotel meeting room, we, the full-time, well-paid employees of Access Internet Magazine, create a convincing air of confidence, of go-go e-business wiles, high on the Net-savvy narcotic of the zeitgeist vibe, a self-assurance and self-pleased demeanor that would be comic if it weren't so tragic. Looking back at it now, that is. Sure, some of us worried rough times were ahead. At least I did. I'm a worrier, though. Yet, even considering my natural pessimism, it would be hard to imagine how quickly such things can end.... More

RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT: : As the advent of the Internet has transformed the way the world takes care of business, it has similarly revolutionized the world of sex work. RDR 06.18.01: ROD AMIS gives the first installment of his Serbian Diary "Tesla's Dreams" RDR 06.18.01: MARGARET CAREY shares a moving look at how prisoners in Britain make the world a bit better for disabled orphans in India. "The Inside Out Trust" DAY ONE: Even where records exist, it is difficult to trace causality without trawling through millions of words of private journal (I, for example, write more than 500 words per day), so I cannot say how much Gide knew of the theories of Freud; but I clearly remember feeling an inner jolt when reading Symphonie Pastorale; the child in fiction had lost its unquestioned innocence. Of course fiction is crammed with knowing children, assuming the language, responsibility and heroism of adults but Freud's specific adduction of their sexuality changed the child/adult relationship forever. They were ours no less than they ever had been but they were competitors.
The terms of trade in sexuality changed radically with the conjunction of the contraceptive pill and rock music. Since then, as our children have become more knowing, though no wiser (a condition frequently misdiagnosed as sophisticated) and as nutrition has (though not as much as is thought) advanced the age of puberty, we have become confused about what we think a child is. ... Lufthansa found my clothes in Munich. My clothes are in San Francisco, as Mike Mallen has not managed to send them here yet. He pressured me to produce some more work for VPS, after I explained the dire situation here, promising to send a payment on Friday. I did. He didn't.
