Updated: MONDAY, 1 OCTOBER, 2001 (GMT)* EVENT # 284: FULL MOON, BLUE MARBLE NEXT UPDATE SCHEDULED MONDAY, 8 OCTOBER, 2001 |
The Full Moon is upon us and you know the effect that has on our mercurial publisher. Rod, after all, used to throw weekly Full Moon Parties when he lived with his future wife down in Austin, Tejas. Not much has changed on that front. Sparks are flying again as The World's Magazine brings you more thought-provoking alternative commentary.

Nostradamus, Malachi & MeMATTIE LENNON
All forecasts with not a great track-record of accuracy. I'm inclined to agree with Bacon: ".....predictions ought to serve but for winter talk by the fireside." I've encountered prophecies of doom from various quarters. Nostradamus left us some cryptic clues about The END, as did Malachi, nearer home. Heath Watson, a religious leader, says the good among us have nothing to worry about as "We'll glide straight up to Heaven". My late father found out somewhere that we were promised two thousand years with "a tilly in" not to mention a Dunraven farmer I met last August. I gave my father a lift to a match in Dublin, and apart from his endeavours to dispel my naïveté of the wiles of the female, he frightened the life out of me with some lesser-known Biblical revelations which he claimed would have particular relevance in the year 2000. (I nearly picked up a couple of on-the-spot fines in my haste to deposit him in the Metropolis -- or somewhere -- as quickly as possible.) And now I see where well-heeled film actor, Jean Claude Van Dame, has learned that the end of the world is at hand, through a nuclear holocaust.....but only for Europe and America. So he has bought thousands of acres of land in Australia. There he is going to keep a male and a female of every species he can find. He is rounding up animals two-by-two.
But why didn't he pick Asia or Africa?.. More
WAR! (Hnh! Good God!) What is It Good For?THOMAS HARTAUSTIN, TEJAS - Everywhere you go right now, from office cubicles to the mirrors behind the danged bars, you can see that photo-copied picture of international terrorist Osama Bin Laden with a "Wanted: Dead or Alive" inscription under his funky mug. Amurricans are p.o.'ed after what happened on September 11 and the Mouthpiece Media are eating up they chance to be a big Propaganda Machine. Down in here in the Republic, we are as militaristic as they come. Not to mention so-called patriots and war-mongerers --- we came up with that battle cry "Remember the Alamo." So your old pal, Tabloid Hart, Fellow Sanitation Engineers, is in a real tough spot writing for a magazine that is committed to the notion of peace.
Sorry, Mr. Publisher, I'm breaking out my thirty-aught-six for the War on Terrorism. I need to kick some terrorist ass!.. More
HERDKEVIN CAREYI've read my Nietzsche --- reluctantly, it must be admitted. I have stood up and been counted (not difficult to count to one) and I have stalked out of comfort down the long road into extremely temporary deprivation. In other words, I am my own person. We all are. The way we've taken Herder to heart, made our parents' lives hell and worn our baseball caps back to front you know how serious we are about individualism. Whether we are individual about individualism is another matter. Strange how, in spite of our protestations, we seem to end up in the same kind of places, doing the same kind of things, eating the same kind of food and wearing the same kind of clothes.
I never thought I'd see the day, outside the Church's shoe market, when people would go fanatical about footwear branding and parading, right down to the way the laces are tied; or not. Whatever we might have gained in the age of Marlon Brando and James Dean and John Osborne, we seem to have lost it now... More

POWERSSOUND: : Rosemary Clooney and a big band go together. When she was a youngster, fresh out of her hometown -- Maysville, Kentucky -- she and sister Betty toured the nation with Tony Pastor's band.
Now in her 73rd year, Rosemary again is working with a big band, namely the youthful Big Kahuna and the Copa Cat Pack. Don't worry about that hard-to-remember moniker. The Cat Pack plays with verve, enthusiasm and the energy that's often available only to the young.
Rosemary appears to have been invigorated by having leader Matt Catingub's boys stirring up a storm while playing golden chestnuts from the past. Rosemary's new album, "Sentimental Journey" (Concord Records) concentrates on mostly familiar tunes from the past, with a couple of new ones that demonstrate Ms. Clooney has been listening to new material. ... Lynda is being re-activated into the world of people who care about our life on this planet by other adroit, serious people who don't want more death and destruction. And that makes her remember me. Me as I was as a young university student and me as a disciple of Bertrand Russell today. The better Rod; the one she first brought out in me... "Full Moon, Blue Marble" ROD AMIS More
