D.A. BLYLER

Dear Good Doctor English,

Could you provide an explanation as to when one should use "which" and when one should us "that"? I have a grammar program and not infrequently when I use "which" it suggests that better usage would be "that". Also, an acquaintance told me that there are 47 prepositions and recited them quite rapidly. Is he correct and if so could you list them?

Thomas
Glen Mills, PA

Dear Thomas,

The good doctor understands your problem. Grammar programs are notoriously fickle software, and while whimsicality can at times be a breath of fresh air when housed within the contours of a lovely lady, it is indeed bothersome when found in a computer program... More

Skitch Returns, With Strings

BOB POWERS

MARIETTA, OH, USA - You could easily win the Scrooge contest for Unhappiest Individual of 2002 if you are able to avoid smiling while listening to the first CD by pianist Skitch Henderson in many years.

I see that several of you are saying, "Who the hell is Skitch Henderson?" That's understandable, since Henderson was a major name in popular music a long, long time ago. Don't let the fact that he'll become 83 in late January suggest that he's not up to snuff on his musical p's and q's. Mr. Henderson may have been keeping a low profile for some time, but you'll have trouble detecting any diminished capacities... More

REFLECTIONS

ROD AMIS

NEW ORLEANS, 6 January, 2002 - It's been an odd week that seems to have passed quickly. Somehow, this week there's been a lot of swirling talk surrounding me about me as --- well, Writer. Not construction worker, or house painter, or even editor -- but writer. The people in London decided they liked the treatment Dragana and I put together for the new screenplay and are talking about optioning it. We'll see. Matt thinks I do indeed have one more book in me, though Lord knows what leads him to that opinion. And then there is my usual convoluted woman thing.

I met another woman this week who is very interesting, but (again) there are complications. It's a variation on my bent coin theme. Let's not discuss it, if you don't mind. I'm saving myself for marriage. Heh!... More

North Shore Art in War

DOUGLAS MC DANIEL

HAVERHILL, MA, USA - If the medium is the message, then the date, Sept. 11, is the portal where we pour all of our pain to put it on digital display.

The message is our mantra, our artistic Alamo. And here at the new front of the new war, the bleeding hearts and artists are shaken and stirred like all of the flags waving in the breeze.

"Since Sept. 11," says Ron DiRito, a teacher at Montserrat College whose specialty is art and media and its context and meaning in society, "I don't think (people who live elsewhere) understand what it's like for us.

"I think the rest of the country doesn't have the same kind of ...," he pauses, looking for ways to explain how it feels to be at the front of this new war, then, completing the thought: " Everybody in New York understands it better than other people in the rest of the country. The physical distance changes our perception of something. There is this overwhelming sensibility."...More

Damn the Shallow

BILL STEVENS

PUGET SOUND, USA - A lot of people aren't going to like what I have to say with this entry, or agree with me. But that's dandy because I don't agree with the way they think or live either. In fact, lots of people just make me sick. It's one thing to know that there are a lot of stupid people abroad in the land, it's completely another to sit by silently as they celebrate stupidity.

What I'm talking about is the glorification of shallowness. If you have to ingest American media, you get more than your fill of it. From the Dell Computer spokesguy in that inane commercial to magazines like Stuff, there are hundreds of thousands of examples of how the rush to make us all good little shoppers also means equating a Star Wars action figure collection with reading Tolstoi. I'm sick of it!... More
