AMERICAN DREAMS:
Text graphic: 'american dreams - Why Cheney Should Resign'.

by BRAD BALFOUR

A waving American Flag.New York, NY, USA - This week's media buzz: corporate crime, CEO scammers and stock market chaos. Suddenly the attention shifts from homeland security and the debate over the new cabinet office. Then the specter of Osama Bin Laden's existence is again trotted out before the media and the focus shifts again.

Sometimes it seems the two are inextricably entwined. Accusations of further scandals by corporations that have supported the politicians -- particularly Republican ones -- are buttressed by new threats to the nation and "our state of war." New discussions about campaign finance reform are overshadowed by new threats from the Middle East....MORE

RECOMMENDED DAILY REQUIREMENT:
Text graphic: 'recommended daily requirement - Israel, With Weariness & Fear '.

by LIONEL ROLFE

Los Angeles, CA, USA - It is with a certain weariness and even fear that I lift my pen -- so to speak -- and put down a few thoughts about Israel. It is necessary to do so because the country to which I remain very attached is going down a road that will only lead to its demise.

I grew up getting beaten up for being a Jew. Back in the fifties in Long Beach, California, I was chased home through the back alleys from Woodrow Wilson High School by a gang of Christian thugs. Their leader was the son of a minister, and oh my God what a bigot was he!

The basic charge was that as a Jew, I was responsible for Christ getting killed. I guess I did it personally. That's what they seemed to be saying. Or something horrible coursed through my veins, and that horrible something was that I was a Jew whose antecedants had drunk the blood of Christian children...MORE

G21 MIDDLE EAST
Text graphic: 'G21 mideast - A Religion Held Captive'.

by JAMIE MENUTIS

New Orleans, LA, USA - With a lack of any foreseeable ending to the Mideast conflict and an American administration that shows no obvious interest in pursuing peace efforts, Muslim Americans are preparing for their civil rights to further disintegrate. Following 9/11 and the surge of hate crimes directed towards Muslims, one of the first American groups to speak to concerned Muslim Americans were Japanese Americans. Japanese Americans felt that their experience during WWII might provide some valuable lessons from which Muslim Americans might benefit.

In hindsight, Japanese Americans point to a number of factors that led to their being the victims of internment within their own country. Firstly, within the Japanese community during WWII there was a crisis of leadership -- no one to speak as the representative for their group. The atmosphere in the country was one of fear and hysteria, which led people to react more on the basis of fear than common sense. Lastly, Japanese Americans were easy victims because of their obvious physical differences.

Muslim Americans share a similar situation in present day America...MORE

POWERSSOUND
Text graphic: 'powerssound - Terry Gibbs' Dreamland: One More Time'.

by BOB POWERS

Marietta, OH, USA - When vibraphone master Terry Gibbs stumbled across 24 tapes in his closet last year, the world would benefit from the resulting CD, "Dreamband: One More Time" (Contemporary Records) It's the sixth album featuring one of the monster groups of 1959.

The album spotlights the wonderful work on vibes by a man whose ability to create excitement in front of a big band is well nigh incredible. Other masters of the vibes may elicit prettier sounds. Soloists may have a bit more spunk in other bands. But in putting the whole package together, Gibbs and aggregation create some sensational sounds that equal just about any big band you'll ever hear....MORE

MY GLASS HOUSE:

Photo of Jessica Alba. NEW ORLEANS - 23 July, 2002 - I learned today that Robert Oduol, whose writing appeared in these pages intermittently for almost three years, passed away in a house fire on 7 July in Kenya. Mr. Oduol was only 34 years of age. The message came to me from his fellow Kenyan writer, Binyavanga Wainaina. We both expressed our sadness to Robert's publishers in Africa, after reading the news, in separate e-mails. Binj and I both met Robert Oduol here at the G21. We both admired and respected his well-researched and insightful pieces about life and economics in East Africa. He will be sorely missed.

My regret at not ever having the wherewithal to meet Robert face-to-face is heavy on me as I write this. I never even had a face to place with the name, as Robert was one of those writers who never got around to sending me a .gif or. jpeg of his photo to use. If only ...MORE

SUBJECT: Thoughts from a Preacher's Kid

Excuse me sir, but could I have a moment of your time. I just read through your article, and I beg to differ. For one, some of us have a little self respect. I know that if some of the other PK's I know had read this, your inbox would be full. I know that I don't appriciate it being spread across the internet that you will have a wild time with a preacher's daughter. And another thing...I don't appreciate you saying that all preachers are just puttin on a show. Some are heart felt and sincere. Yes I admit that there are some people out there saying one thing and doing another. But that doesn't mean all preachers are hipocrites. I would appreciate it if you wouldn't put trash about people like me on the internet anymore.

Sincerly,
A PK
