Nairobi, KENYA - What identifies a people? Language? Wrong. Clothing? Maybe.
The youth in Kenya have developed a language that is synonymous with them but it is not standard everywhere it is spoken. The language, known as sheng , is a mixture of English and Kiswahili. It is thought that the language was developed in the 1980's by youth living in the urban areas with an aim of having a language that they could easily converse among themselves without other people (read "guardians") knowing what they were discussing.
The guardians did not take it lightly and there was hue and cry all over that the language was eroding English, which is the official language spoken in the country. Furthermore, they said that standard of Kiswahili, which is also taught in schools and is the national language, was going down. What they did not say however was that they (guardians) were feeling left out in the conversations of the youth that could now converse freely among themselves without their talk being eavesdropped upon....MORE

Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA - Our first son, Andrew, was born by Caesarean Section on 26/05/1998, weighing 3.48 kg. His Apgar Scores were 9 and 10 respectively and he was absolutely fabulous.
Although I suffered from Post Natal Depression, which was diagnosed and treated with a fluoxetine tablet, Andrew himself gave us absolutely no problems. He slept through the night from the age of six weeks, smiled at six weeks and could roll over and hold his head up by the age of three months.
His progress seemed to stop there.
At the age of eight months, he was still doing no more, and we started to become concerned. By now, we thought, he should be starting to sit up and crawl. Our regular paediatrician, who had seen Andrew at six months, and said all was fine, was fully booked and his receptionist gave us the name of another doctor in our area. We booked an appointment...MORE

The above, written in perfect Copperplate, was handed to me by octogenarian Kerry poet Dan Keane when I told him I was writing a piece about Peggy Sweeney.
When I met and talked to the singer herself she spoke in equally glowing terms of Dan. But, then, she struck me as the kind of person who would have great difficulty speaking unkindly of anyone. Any mild criticism of a fellow human being seemed to be invariably followed by. "Ah....he (or she) is alright".
Peggy was born in Rathea, Co. Kerry, the second youngest of seven children....MORE
Dublin, IRELAND - What could I say about Peggy?Nothing but the truth.
I loved her songs and her singing
I heard away back in my youth.
Her songs were food to my Soul
Her voice was a thrill to my ear.
I loved her then as a child,
It was mutual and sincere.
I love her today as a friend
And the memories shared together.
Her songs still lift my soul
Like the lark warbling o'er the heather.
What can I say about Peggy?
Thanks for the joy she has given.
Blest be the dawn of our friendship
When Peggy was only seven.

Marietta, OH, USA - There are lots of great jazz pianists around these days, but Arbors Jazz offers one of the very best showcased in an album that should please piano devotees everywhere. "An Intimate Evening with Dave McKenna" is the tenth release in the Arbors Piano Series and it must rank at the top for sheer entertainment value.
McKenna believes in the power of the melody, and he demonstrates that sticking close to the melody can produce results that will cause all admirers of the well-played piano to smile broadly...MORE
... Back on the Streets
You can read a great perspective on this issue (by Adamma Ince) in this article in the 14 August edition of the Village Voice. Lots of my white American readers will have a hard time with that article and this "Glass House". I'm used to having my opinions called "controversial". I'm a damned Socialist, after all...MORE
NEW ORLEANS - 17 August, 2002: I should be on the streets of Washington, District of Columbia -- our disenfranchised national capital -- today, helping my people to send a message that Malcolm X encouraged us to send. As Malcolm said, if your family made their money two hundred years ago, you will still feel entitled to collect your inheritance today. If you were owed back wages, you would expect to get paid. Every court in the land would uphold your right to that money. Alan Dershowitz would be proud to be your attorney.
