GLOBAL*BEAT:
Text graphic: 'Nouvelle New Orleans -2: Hot Club of New Orleans'.

by ROD AMIS

NEW ORLEANS - This Reporter continues in one bad habit: I show up early. Nothing happens in New Orleans on time. The schedule for The Spotted Cat says the Hot Club of New Orleans plays at 10:00 p.m. on this Thursday night under the full moon. ("Blue Moon" the women in Taxco e-mail me.) This will be the first time I've heard the band, though I interviewed its informal "leader", Christopher Kohl, earlier in the day.

I don't usually venture out on a Thursday night. I did this past Thursday, to hear the "get" band. These are the Dog Days, after all. Late August when most people in New Orleans leave this town. Including members of bands. One of the two guitars in the Hot Club is in Spain, the other is visiting Out East. I get to hear what's called "Hot Club 2"...MORE

by BRAD BALFOUR

New York, NEW YORK, USA - In these dog days of summer, it's a good time to think of recreational frivolities such as baseball. Of course, baseball does not let us forget it - even by drawing attention to the recent union-owner conflict. Hearing both sides bitch about money is like listening to two Enron executives battle over golden parachute particulars. At the end of the day, however, it's still a conflict of owners holding all the cards and workers consolidating to fight for rights.

Is it just a matter of greed vs. greed? They couldn't have picked a worse season to dispute over millions while the rest of us are trying to rethink corporate America, survive the stock market or just survive.

Maybe we need to re-evaluate our entire system and what drives it. When articles are written about these battles, I hope they take a much deeper look at the economic structure of America and the class conflicts in place. Too often, we lose sight of the fact that this is a class conflict because of the number of digits at issue....MORE

by TELSA CRONE

Lost River, WEST VIRGINIA, USA - Since the attacks of our nation on September 11, 2001, It seems as though the news stations have been full of stories of racial discrimination rearing its ugly head in one form or another.

About a week after the terrorists kamikazed into our lives, I remember turning on the news to an interview of an Arab child and her mother. It seems while waiting for a plane at one of our international airports, security gaurds had forced the young girl to remove her head wrap. Of course, in Muslim religion, it is a symbol as important to her as the cross is to a Christian.

We all realize the government's responsibility to keep us safe as American citizens, especially when our freedom has been threatened. The young girl in question was an American citizen, so what was the point in demeaning an innocent child?...MORE

POWERSSOUND
Text graphic: 'powerssound - Gi Gi Gryce: The Bio, The CD'.

by BOB POWERS

Marietta, OH, USA - Over the past four years or so that I've written "Powerssound" for G21, one thing continues to irritate. There's never enough time. That damned deadline pops up, almost unexpectedly, every week and despite what seemed to be best efforts, there are stacks of new CDs that have gone unplayed and new stacks arriving on a regular basis through the good graces of the U.S. Postal Service, UPS and Fed Ex.

Finally, this spot of the dial has taken on the look of a winner, a place where record companies can send material and have it written about in a reasonable amount of time. Nevertheless, the reader doesn't know that the four or five new albums devoured in every column have required an amazing amount of time to hear, research and play more than once. In fact, most of the material sent to me by gracious record companies proves worthwhile and should please collectors who care as much about music, particularly jazz, as this scribbler.

Arriving unannounced a couple of months back was a new and brilliant biography of the now mostly forgotten jazz alto sax player named Gi Gi Gryce. Rat Race Blues (Berkley Hills Books, $18.95 paperback) tells its compelling story with a great amount of detail. Authors Noal Cohen and Michael Fitzgerald have performed their duties with skill. The book doesn't offer as much personal detail as some readers might desire, but overall it's an excellent book that examines Gryce, a reserved man whose extreme talents never received the full recognition he deserved....MORE

Photo of Jett Li.NEW ORLEANS - 28 August, 2002: This Web site looks out at you, even as you look in at us, you know.

Like any good Webmaster, I look at what operating system you use to look at us, how long you stay, and what pages you visit. What I do each week is based on the information the "cookies" give me about you. I know more about you than you think

For better or worse, and if I ever mean to sell any advertisers on supporting an alternative and decidedly Leftist site like this one, this is information I need to know. I wish it was otherwise...MORE

THE WORLD - From David C., Salisbury, UK:

SUBJECT: America The Naive

I read Jamie Menutis's article with interest & some surprise. It is pleasing to me that at least one American has this insight into how much of the rest of the world perceives America. I had a fairly unique insight into the mind of the average American when, as an Englishman, I found myself working abroad in the midst of about 7,000 Americans on September 11 2001. I was also in communication with my wife in England & an American friend by e-mail.

After the initial shock, conversation turned to a struggle to find an explanation. Most of my fellow British workers were amazed at the American reaction which at the extreme developed into blinkered patriotism with the liberal purchase of American flags & t-shirts printed with, what we considered, rather bad taste images such as that of the American eagle sharpening it's claw in preparation for "rising from the ashes and ripping out the heart of it's enemies!". This image surrounded by the flags of America's allies including the Union Jack....MORE
