An Extended Editorial

by ROD AMIS

NEW ORLEANS - 5 September, 2002: On 16 September, 2001, after omitting to do a Glass House for our first issue following the tragedy, I had this to say:

I am unbelievably sad. There are so many reasons I feel this way besides the horrific loss of life that occurred in my country this week.

Most importantly, I am saddened because many who feel the same fear and loathing as I do are probably being cowed into not expressing their misgivings for fear of being accused of being unpatriotic or worse -- and that is a chilling prospect. The dragon's teeth are being sown....MORE

Text graphic: 'american dreams - American Woman'

by JAMIE MENUTIS

New Orleans, LA, USA - Having lunch with a friend a few weeks ago, our conversation casually turned to the topic of trying to understand the behaviors of men. This is nothing new; I've had variations of this same conversation over the years. Little progress has has actually been made in this area, but still we try. By the time we're onto our coffees, my friend surprises me with the firm conclusion that she "wasn't a feminist, but was beginning to believe that women were just superior beings." Perhaps, but even more curious and shocking to me was her firm manner when stating that she was "not a feminist"! It made me wonder exactly how and when it became such a tainted idea to think of oneself as a feminist and what had made some women (and men) buy into this belief.

Luckily, I missed out on the negative backlash that women who were part of the feminist movement of recent times had to endure. I grew up in a time when many of our most important legal rights had already been established. I realize that this is a luxury indeed and one that I appreciate.

Still, the reason that today's women in America have the right to vote, attend university, work, and have other legal rights and protections is largely due to women who fought and struggled earlier on our behalf...MORE

New York, NY, USA - Throughout a fateful month marked by some of the most intense violence between the Israelis and Palestinians, two film festivals happening simultaneously -- the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival and the 18th Israel Film Festival 2002 -- suggested an alternative to this acrimony.

As Elie Wiesel received a lifetime achievement award at the opening of the Israel Fest, bombs were exploding in major Israeli cities...MORE

Text graphic: 'Nouvelle New Orleans -2: Hot Club of New Orleans'.

by ROD AMIS

NEW ORLEANS - This Reporter continues in one bad habit: I show up early. Nothing happens in New Orleans on time. The schedule for The Spotted Cat says the Hot Club of New Orleans plays at 10:00 p.m. on this Thursday night under the full moon. ("Blue Moon" the women in Taxco e-mail me.) This will be the first time I've heard the band, though I interviewed its informal "leader", Christopher Kohl, earlier in the day.

I don't usually venture out on a Thursday night. I did this past Thursday, to hear the "get" band. These are the Dog Days, after all. Late August when most people in New Orleans leave this town. Including members of bands. One of the two guitars in the Hot Club is in Spain, the other is visiting Out East. I get to hear what's called "Hot Club 2"...MORE

Lost River, WEST VIRGINIA, USA - Since the attacks of our nation on September 11, 2001, It seems as though the news stations have been full of stories of racial discrimination rearing its ugly head in one form or another.

About a week after the terrorists kamikazed into our lives, I remember turning on the news to an interview of an Arab child and her mother. It seems while waiting for a plane at one of our international airports, security gaurds had forced the young girl to remove her head wrap. Of course, in Muslim religion, it is a symbol as important to her as the cross is to a Christian.

We all realize the government's responsibility to keep us safe as American citizens, especially when our freedom has been threatened. The young girl in question was an American citizen, so what was the point in demeaning an innocent child?...MORE
