NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans is experiencing a revolution of sorts. In our Nouvelle New Orleans series, reporter Jamie Menutis sits down with New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin and Chief Technology Officer, Greg Meffert, in a candid discussion about the exciting and surprising changes going on with the new Administration. Out of the political establishment, Ray Nagin surprised everyone by winning the vote. He took office just six months ago with a fierce vow to rid City Hall of its years of corruption and bring New Orleans into a new age of technology, prosperity and development. Here's what they told G21...MORE

NEW YORK, NY, USA - It's not bad enough that the Jews get blamed for wrongs in Hollywood and on Wall Street ... but now September 11? Amiri Baraka, the poet laureate of New Jersey, read his poem "Somebody Blew Up America" this month at the New Jersey Poetry Festival. Somebody? Hey Amiri, I know it's not as smooth as poetry but if you picked up a newspaper you would see we found the culprits. As a matter of fact, we've been fighting a war against them for a year.
Actually to be fair to Mr. Baraka the poem was originally written in October 2001 (It's not like we didn't know then who did it, either) which even makes it more shocking that he was picked as Poet Laureate of New Jersey last summer by a six-member board appointed by the New Jersey Council. I can only imagine the members of this board read as much poetry as the rest of us...MORE

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - Good evening from South Africa -- a rather wet, rainy South Africa at that, as our first waters have come in force to wash our gardens, streets, rooves, fences, cars and souls (?) clean. There is something soothing about listening to the rain falling softly but determinedly onto rooftops -- however, the same source of peace can turn to one of stress if it is heard at 4.30 in the afternoon and you know that you have to battle through the ever-increasing traffic on Johannesburg's highways and that you are only likely to get home at 7pm, with the irritating fact that you only live 10km away sitting at the back of your mind -- this journey should not be taking you 2 and a half hours!...MORE

MARIETTA, OH, USA - Over the course of 150 "Powerssound" columns since this little exercise in music reviewing launched more than three years ago, I have tried to be fair in my assessments of new albums. For the most part, I have met my goal. There have been moments when I went for the cheap shot when saying nothing would have been the best choice. To those musicians who were slammed when I should have simply ignored their work, my apologies.
Over the next 150 columns, I will do my best to provide accurate accounts of music newly offered to the public, especially those who share my love for jazz in all its many colors. But I've never tried to restrict the column to appealing only to jazz hounds. If you're one of those rare readers whose tastes include jazz, but also bend enough to see the good in the popular music (especially of the '30s through the '60s), blues, bluegrass, traditional and folk varieties, I hope my own catholic (with the small c) tastes travel on the same rails as yours...MORE

SUBJECT: hot club article
Rod: thanks for doing that spot on the Hot Club of New Orleans. Those guys sound great together & they're all versatile musicians. But I wanted to point out that you characterized Snug Harbor as not being known for music! Snug has been having music seven nights a week for what seems like decades... both reputable locals and national & international acts. This is not secondary to the restaurant...

NEW ORLEANS - 5 October, 2002: One of my fingers is beginning to break out again, the usual symptom of my being under stress. I'm thankful it's only one hand so far, instead of both. I should have expected this, considering the harried events of the past week.
I moved again on Tuesday, deeper into the French Quarter, a quiet place where I am mostly alone. That's a good thing. I was born in the Year of the Dragon. Dragons thrive in solitude, I'm told.
This morning, before going to my shift at the bar, I'm scheduled to meet a woman, Eura, at a coffee shop to interview her. She has made it a practice of going to funerals these last four years and collecting photographs of the corpses...MORE
