Text Graphix: 'American Dreams - The First Casualty of War'.
by STEVE VIVIAN

A waving American Flag.NEW YORK, NY, USA - An old saying tells us that truth is the first casualty of war. That aged quip is newly revitalized thanks to the "debate" between our nation's Establishment Left and Establishment Right. Our ongoing "war on terrorism" is filled with alarming problems, of course - including the inability of the most celebrated on both the Left and the Right to even think straight, much less stumble on to the truth. Indeed, much of the "public discourse" about Iraq, terrorism, the "clash of cultures", etc., is crippled by raving irrationalities and cracked self-righteousness. Let's take a look, in alphabetical order, at the Left then the Right.

A new darling of the Establishment Left is New Jersey's "poet laureate" Amiri Baraka. Baraka, despite a painful inability to produce anything beyond insipid grade-school rhyme schemes, is basking in Leftist praise for his meditation about 9-11, "Somebody Blew Up America." ...MORE

by STUART ALTMAN

NEW YORK, NY, USA - Before the attacks of September 11, the big topic was election reform. It was embarrassing that the United States -- the biggest supporter of democracy -- could not even figure out who won their Presidential Election. When the night was over Bush had a slight edge over Gore and for the first time in an election we heard terms such as undercount, voters intent, and hanging chad. With the next presidential election coming up in 2004, what have we done about it? Absolutely nothing.

So -- with no time to spare -- where can we learn how to run a presidential election? Apparently it's Iraq. There are no "hanging chads" in Iraq, only "hanging people." That is, if they don't vote for Saddam.

In the recent Iraq election one hundred percent of the people voted and it was all for Saddam Hussein. One Hundred Percent! Who tabulated the votes? Arthur Anderson? That number is so overwhelming for a dictator it may even lead Fidel Castro to call an election someday.....MORE

THE WORLD - From Steve V., New York, NY, USA:

SUBJECT: Excellent Piece!

Hey Rod!

A quick cheers to you: Really enjoyed your latest My Glass House, "Days Like Weeks"...very sharply written and keenly felt. Reading the piece rather transported me right to the Quarter, and it was a vivid trip indeed. Keep up the great work...I'm always happy to find good writing on the Web, and your piece is indeed fine.

Cheers, your faithful reader and very irregular contributor, Steve V. ...MORE

by ROD AMIS

NEW ORLEANS - 30 October, 2002: There are so many things I have missed. The deaths in the theatre in Russia, for example, have passed without a word in this space. Likewise the deaths of the Wellstones. A woman I know told me this week that you cannot watch or read the news any longer without feeling overwhelmed, that your world is spinning out of orbit.

How can one respond?

I would suggest that the only reasoned response is to remember that your own street is not part of the chaos projected toward you from the multiple screens (including this one). The job of any medium is to insist upon holding your attention. Those of us working these vineyards are a demanding lot, in that respect....MORE
