Irish Eyes LogoText Graphic: 'Irish Eyes - Much I Knew About Nothing'.
by MATTIE LENNON

DUBLIN, IRELAND - A reader asked Rod Amis, the editor here at GENERATOR 21, to "Compliment Mattie Lennon on his ability to write about nothing". (This after my article about my antipathy for brown shoes).

I'm not sure if I have the ability to write about nothing (which is not the same thing as not having the ability to write about anything).

When I was made aware of the reader's comment I remembered that Pliny the Younger, more than two thousand years ago, said; "You say you have nothing to write about. Well you can at least write about that".

Easier said than done. This is my first attempt at it and perhaps I should have taken Francis L. Cornford's advice: " Nothing should ever be done for the first time". Writing at any length about nothing is not easy. I don't believe I could pen a thousand words about the contents of my wallet ... .MORE

Text Graphic: 'Recommended Daily Requirement - Death Penalty Debate Killing Me'.

by STUART ALTMAN

Photo of the Man With No Eyes from the film 'Cool Hand Luke'. NEW YORK, NY, USA - One issue that's always a hot topic of discussion is the Death Penalty. People will argue you to death about the death penalty. The people who support it say the bible says an "eye for an eye." This excludes the fact that it does not say "a life for a life". And even if you lose one eye you will still be able to see. Those who are against it insist that the death penalty is Cruel and Unusual Punishment. However it's no crueler than the killer and it's not unusual because the death penalty goes back for ages.

As for myself I am unsure about the Death Penalty because of the irreversibility factor. I know the legal system sometimes makes mistakes, as an attorney, and I don't like things that can't be undone. People then always say to me "but what if you were a hundred percent sure." The only thing one hundred percent sure is that you can never be one hundred percent sure ... MORE

Text Graphic: 'Powerssound - Holiday Specials'.

by BOB POWERS

MARIETTA, OH, USA - With a certain holiday coming closer, I plan to devote columns published prior to Dec. 25 to suggestions for Christmas buying at your favorite music store. My apologies to readers who've looked in vain for "Powerssound" over the past few weeks. I took an unscheduled vacation but have been dutifully listening to new CDs throughout my absent days.

GOODBYE - Gene Ammons entertained jazz fans with his excellent work on tenor saxophone. The new release from Prestige, "Goodbye," captures Ammons and a solid back-up group. The album's material was recorded just prior to the death of Ammons in 1974. Less than five months after he made this recording, he died of undetected cancer. Ammons, who carried the nickname of "Jug," sounds great on the disc after an unusually fine job of remastering. The band behind Ammons included Nat Adderley, Gary Bartz, Kenny Drew, Louis Hayes and Ray Barretto. Ironically, the final song recorded that day was "Goodbye." The album is worth your time and money ... MORE

by PETER BENNETT

Photo of the Eggs scene with Paul Newman in the film 'Cool Hand Luke'. HOBART, TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA - After we've eaten on Friday evenings the kids and I always go around to Mom's house. The kids go for the candy and I go for ... well, I don't know, she's my mom and she has to have someone to be her kid once a week I guess. There's something about the smell of my mom's house I've never been able to put my finger onbut it's that kind of "Granny smell" I've come across many times in elderly ladies houses. It's a sort of amalgam of boiled milk, musty curtains, slightly stale canned cat food and Ford Edsel glove boxes.

It's a generic sort of smell like an end of the week garbage can. No matter what you put in your garbage can, at the end of the week it's guaranteed to end up smelling the same as it did last week. I've been in Italian old ladies homes in Italy where you'd expect to get an ephemeral whiff of oregano or something but no, just that same generic granny smell.

I'm sure the house used to smell different when I was raised in it ... MORE

THE WORLD - FromTracy, (No City Provided), USA:

SUBJECT: your rebuttal to Steele

Greetings.

I have to say I have not come to a conclusion/position on blacks individualism or the lack therefore. I looked at our black people in the news to the entertainment world not to mentioned around me and in my family and I see strong sense of individuality (with the lack of accountablitiy). And I agree to a certain point with you about blacks still fighting for their civil rights yet I comprehend Steele's article on, "The age of white guilt and the disapperance of the black individual". What I am thinking through is equality and how that looks for "us" in this world where humanity is of little regards. Our American society is mortally debacle. So, I think issues as I am responsing to you on are just symptons of our society animalizing mankind (i.e. survival of the fitness, evolution theories, matter vs. material). Our history and other countries' history speak in support of this idea

So this is my take. Thank you for a good rebuttal to Steele.

Text Graphic: 'Letter from South Africa - The Mighty Drakensberg'.

by GAYNOR PAYNTER

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - I bid you good day from a sunny South Africa. Recently, there has been much coverage in the local printed and written media about the levels of crime in South Africa, and points have been raised that I cannot hope to dispute, because they are true. Crime has been committed by South Africans of all races, against South Africans of all races, and I myself am in support of the re-introduction of the death penalty. (I remind you that views expressed here are not necessarily indicative of the publishers of G21, or of the South African government or indeed, any other South African).

Crimes have been committed against tourists, children, women, the elderly, and each time I hear of another crime committed it brings sadness to my heart. One of the many reasons I am left feeling despondent about crime in South Africa is that it surely discourages international tourists to visit our country... MORE

Photo of Paul Newman in the boxing scene of the film 'Cool Hand Luke'. NEW ORLEANS - When I first took this journal from being in print to being an electronic publication, I wrote an article about that horrible feeling you get when you're flat on your back on the mat, you look over to your own corner, and they have the towel in their hands.

"Stay down! Stay down!" your corner is calling out to you. They think you have nothing left. But sometimes nothing is a mighty cool hand.

I've had people say "Stay down!" to me more than once in my life. I'm crazy. I don't listen. I get right back up and take another beating... MORE
