by G21 MAILING LIST MEMBERS & STAFF
G21 WORLD HQ - During the waning hours of 2002, we polled our staff writers and the Mailing List Membership for nominees for our "Bottom Ten" list of individuals for the year. Much like Mr. Blackwell's famed "Worst Dressed" list, ours is a reverse listing; we are choosing the people the world could have done without last year.
What follows is a digest of List Member comments and our final choices, after extensive auditing, of the dregs of humanity last year...MORE
AUSTIN, REPUBLIC OF TEJAS - My Erstwhile Editor sent me the link to this here story in the Washington Times. I think it was his way of hinting that The Tabloid One should get back in the saddle or lose his sinecure here. For those for y'all unfamiliar with the Washington Times it is the official tabloid of stupid conservatives. It's financed by the kind of people dumb enough to have their husbands and wives chosen by a bible-thumpin' Korean conservative preacher and get hitched up in a stadium with thousands of other stupid conservatives. We affectionately call these folks "Moonies" after their preacher, a fellah by the name of Rev. Sun Yung Moon. The Moonies put out this newspaper so that people like Robert Novak and George Dubya ("The Shrub") Bush have something to talk about besides their investment portfolios.... MORE

NEW YORK, NY, USA - One thing good about the Internet is you can find information on anything. One thing bad about the Internet is you can find information supporting anything. It's the latter that has me extremely disturbed.
I have recently found that there are websites that are Pro Anorexia and Bulimia, except they're not called that anymore. I guess the marketing representatives of these two diseases didn't like the negative connotations that come with starving yourself to death so they gave it a newer and hipper names. They are now called Ana (Anorexia) and Mia (Bulimia) so it sounds like two friends a girl may have. Imagine your teenage daughter telling you that she is "going out with Ana and Mia tonight and we'll be hanging out in the bathroom." ... MORE

MARIETTA, OH, USA - One of the saddest parts of being a writer on music is the never-ending need to write obituaries, often of talent that should have achieved more while in residence on Planet Earth.
As I type, my stereo equipment is playing Charles Earland's spectacular CD from 1970, "Black Drops" (Original Jazz Classics). Earland was one of the masters of the organ, especially as it pertained to his chosen type of groove, a delicious melding of jazz and soul. While the life of this speciality didn't last long as a commercial entity, it continues to provide hours of pleasure to those who came to love Earland and his compatriots an unbelievable 33 years ago... DUBLIN, IRELAND - Jim Browe above in Lacken
Had a virile puckan goat
On his prowess , 'mid the bracken
There was every right to gloat.
The she-goats of the nation
He's see they'd have a ball;
For a small remuneration
From their owners one and all.... MORE

I proceeded to relate to her the story of another female bartender I know who has had a stalker for a decade. This creeped her out. I don't think anyone needs a stalker. If you want to feel important, I suggested, do something you consider important. It's easier on the nerves.
I have a stalker, of sorts. She's a strange woman who comes to The Cat every blue moon. She never talks to me while she's in the bar. The first time she approached me I was on my way home from shopping. She asked if I remembered her. I asked if I should. She said, "You're the bartender at The Spotted Cat, aren't you? That's where I saw you."
I felt like saying, Lady, I serve drinks to hundreds of people. The only ones I remember are my regulars or people I've 86ed. But I didn't.

NEW ORLEANS - 5 January, 2003: One of my fellow bartenders here in town, a woman who tends weekend days as I do, but at Checkpoint Charlie's, says that every bartender should have a stalker. I was surprised by this statement and asked for her reasoning. "Oh, it makes you feel important," she said.

THE WORLD -
SUBJECT: Steele
Raheem -
I am a professor in public affairs at a small private university in southern California, and working on race relations in that area, beginning with my school. I am trying to pull together visions for reconciliation between blacks and whites. Sounds like a very white/naiive vision, I know. But if it is true (as has been said) that blacks must take time to mourn what happened to their ancestors, then it seems an appropriate response that whites contemplate the "brutality" of the shame we bear in the deeds of our ancestry. Both races need their (our) humanity redeemed to them (us). The paradox I see is that we can only obtain this affirmation from each other. Whites have denied blacks their dignity forever in this country. The insult to such injury is endured by us. We are a lost soul as a race. The only way to recover our own humanity is to recognize how our fear drives us to destruction... MORE
From Matthew W., (No City Provided, ) CA, USA:
I appreciated your retort to Shelby Steele. I started his article in Harpers but did not finish it - but should. I am white, and I have believed since I was a teen that white guilt was the basis for racism against blacks in this country. The need to justify mistreatment of blacks originates with our fear about what we have coming to us for what we did with slavery, have done with racism, and continue to do. It is a neurotic mess with vicious consequences you clearly understand.
