NEW BOSTON, MI, USA - The desire of some Americans, including politicians and government officials to post the Ten Commandments in public places is nothing new; though for many, it's merely a misguided attempt to make our nation a kinder, safer place. This is evident by the fact that the Christian right often gains unexpected support in its attempts to place the Decalogue in public schools, following tragic shootings, and in courthouses, particularly since 9-11.
But for Alabama's Chief Justice Roy Moore, his erection of the Ten Commandments goes beyond a concern that citizens adhere to our laws. For him, this Constitutional violation is a God-given duty to appoint his Christian god as Supreme Ruler of the land. Roy Moore is a dilemma Alabamians have dealt with for some time, particularly since he took it upon himself to situate the 5,280-pound monument in the lobby of Alabama's state judicial building two years ago... NAIROBI, KENYA - The Britons taught us may things for the 70 years they lorded over us. Some of the things they taught us were good while others were bad. They taught us basic hygiene paving the way for a reduction in infant mortality and subsequent population rise. They taught us how to read and write, they taught us how to use money without teaching us how to make it, they attempted with great effort and determination to teach us how to think rationally. On this, they did not go far, the Renaissance man they wanted to imbue in us did not flourish, 100 years after the Missionaries with zeal and determination opened the East African Interior, witchcraft is still mentioned even in the highest levels of institutions that ought to be rational and progressive, the government and the church. The Britons taught us with unusual enthusiasm how to pray a new God without facing Mt. Kenya and other sacred grounds. Just when the religious fire they had ignited was about to eat its last embers, a new seed was quickly replanted by the new Pentecostal churches , this time originating in the US, a country where it is illegal to pray in school.
But the men from British Isles, that emerald island of great patriotic people, the land of Kipling and Churchill, also taught us a few bad things, or may be we learnt them independently, like how to be selfish, and exploit one another in the name of competition, they taught us how to be individualistic and self-centered. This systematically undermined the African social system that had guided and kept the society together for generations... MORE

You sure it wasn't Andrew? Andrew couldn't have been missed. The Trail of Tears . . . . What did Stonewall the Obsessive Christian Brilliant Tactician do?

But dammit, there are those exceptions. And Selah, a blonde with a gorgeous set of pipes, demonstrates that she's no flavor of the month, no young inexperienced lass riding to fame and fortune on the good luck of excellent taste and a mesmerizing collection of backing musicians. Take my advice, long-time readers, and tarry not on your trip to the nearest record emporium... MORE
MARIETTA, OH, USA - Let's talk about world music, new age music, and so forth. Under most circumstances, if you said that to me, you'd receive an abrupt, "Go to heck!" and I'd change the subject. But as in all things of life, there are exceptions to any rule. I have made a point of despising new age clutter, perhaps endurable only when in the throes of insomnia at 3 a.m. New age could put me out as my brain fell asleep, followed by the rest of my body.

Screenplay? Me? Absurd! Out of character as well as outrageous!
So, like the proverbial cow I proceeded to kick over my own bucket of milk.
Maudlin 'r' us. I had no right to feel that good. I am still only a bike delivery guy, after all. I'm busted and can't seem to find a niche that will shelter me. As much as I encourage those who have pledged aid to step up, the mailbox remains empty. I save cigarette butts to "recycle" into second generation, hand rolled cigarettes - makes a pack last twice as long. The editing job seems to be circling the airport. I've received neither copy to work on or a new reason why it is not forthcoming.... MORE
NEW ORLEANS - 25 July, 2003: It only takes a couple of good things happening to ruin a perfectly bad week. Ian and Mary hired me to finish a moving job for them that afforded me a couple extra bucks this week. That made me feel so buoyant that I got up at seven on Wednesday morning and banged out the first twenty pages of a proposed screenplay that came to me in a brainflash.
