by KIMBERLY BLAKER

NEW BOSTON, MI, USA - Ongoing revelations of the extent of sexual abuse that's occurred in the Boston Catholic Archdiocese continue to rock the nation, especially as it becomes apparent that the Catholic leaders guilty of protecting the church at the expense of abused children will suffer little, if any, repercussion for their inaction.

Last week it was reported that at least 1,000 children have been victimized during the past 60 years by approximately 250 priests and church workers, in the Boston archdiocese alone. But the State's hands are now tied in the vast majority of cases, insofar as doling out penalties and sentences to those guilty of protecting the molesters. This because, prior to 2002, Massachusetts law didn't require clergy to report known abuse cases... MORE

Charlie's fantasy shot. SAN FRANCISCO, CA, USA - I have tried to steer this space into being the place where you find advice on your emotion commotion, but that don't act as a barrier for those of youse who send me other kinds of e-mail. For example, I have one Loyal Reader who just loves to e-mail me stuff with a note attached along the lines of "This sure deserves the Tuna Treatment!" Sometimes I agree and sometimes I don't.

This time the guy sent me an article by some frail name of Carrie Hill Wilner over at Nerve. In the article, young Carrie - a Manhattanite herself - opens by explaining how happy she was that that HBO show "Sex and The City" is finally goin' off the air. I can relate to that. I can see how any actual young woman living in Manhattan would think that show blows. But the real kicker of the article is her celebration of women now being able to enjoy a "Slut Phase" of their lives without gettin' a "reputation". BRAVO! Charlie the Tuna is ready to go on record as sayin' I'm all for every gal out there havin' a Slut Phase.... MORE

by MPUTHUMI NTABENI

QUEENSTOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - My father died from peptic ulcer last year this month. I went to my computer as usual for some catharsis and wrote these words when I heard the news:

There's a harsh finality about death that changes one's angle of looking at certain things. Let alone remembering the days when you were young. The memory of those days crowds everything I do. My father's tired face, patient smile, withdrawing silences that never trusted in the patterns of life that are accompanied by noise and slogans. The way he seemed to observe life with a tired compassion. My father was never a town person. He spent most of his time in his rural home where we shall be burying him this weekend.

When death of the loved one comes neat words and phrases go dead. Only a wounded heart remains... MORE

Text Graphic: 'Powerssound - Suzy Isn't Bogus'.

by BOB POWERS

MARIETTA, OH, USA - Suzy Bogguss, perhaps the classiest warbler in country music, has made a bold step with her new album, "Swing" (Compadre Records). Working with the wondrous Ray Benson and his superb Asleep at the Wheel band, Bogguss makes a bold bid to move, at least partially, from the country scene. She sounds totally comfortable with a dynamic package of songs, both old favorites and new charts that sound like they could have been created in the swing era of some 40 or more years ago.

It was time for Bogguss too make a move, her country career having reached a point where the hits have slowly diminished. She's far too good as a singer (and she's absolutely gorgeous to boot) to allow herself to watch a decent career just dribble away. The release of "Swing" has caught the fancy of music writers at magazines and newspapers across the country, getting her more publicity and praise than she's found in some time. And she sounds ready, indeed... MORE

Text Graphic: 'Recommended Daily Requirement - Acting for Theatre'.

by STEVE OGAH

Theatre is a unique and special place for acting. When I read and then find some meaning of interpretation for a play, the medium that comes to my mind for the staging of actions inherent in a script is the stage. The stage provides the platform for immediate audience assessment of how I carry out the role of a particular character. In the theatre, there is no room for short cuts. In acting for theatre, I am provided with the opportunity of meeting my first real critic - the audience. In the darkness of the theatre they sit, watch, and are able to assess how well I have carried out an assigned role.

The constructive mind of theatre-goers is always at work when watching an actor, and their applause, smiles, jeers and empathy are all valuable assessment of my theatrical abilities... MORE

Text Graphic: 'My Glass House - Old Man on a Bike'.

by ROD AMIS

Photo of Lisa Ray. NEW ORLEANS - 29 July, 2003: A few of my personal clouds lifted on Monday. Terry sent an emergency infusion of cash so that I might eat again and get the bike back on the road for work this Wednesday. It was truly a godsend. In his e-mail, he suggested that I call him collect. Again, he suggested that I consider moving to the northern California countryside and re-trying the life up there.

That would be one way of putting the lie to my oft' stated conviction that I am fated to die in New Orleans. Of course, California is nearly as broke as Louisiana these days - Thank you, Mr. Bush - and is the seat of the circus of recalling its governor on the basis of lack of charisma. They pass too many laws in that state, for my tastes; I've always considered the Initiative and Referendum movement an excuse for politicians to dodge the tough issues and legislatures to abrogate their mandated responsibilities. Maureen Dowd reports in Monday's New York Times that California state house leader John Burton didn't even know all the vagaries of the 1911 law being used for this recall until a few days ago. When Maureen Dowd's laser satire turns from the White House to you, you know you're in trouble.

Back to Cali, where the GENERATOR 21 was born? Well, I can't really even consider such a move, or a move at all, until this legal travail in New Orleans is behind me. If my experience thus far is any guide, the slow, twisting ludicrous nature of The New Orleans Way will again obtain and I'll be mired down here for years... MORE
