LAGOS, NIGERIA - Between 9-10 seconds into the match against China ,David Beckham hit his first ball for Real Madrid at the Beijing Workers' stadium. And the crowd roared. The maestro, and dreaded dead ball virtuoso was fully, that of Real Madrid.
The build up to David Beckham's first match for Real Madrid created a frenzy. It would not be out of place to put it that most, if not all, of China was in a feverish mood to behold the charismatic winger-cum-midfielder in the dazzling white of Real Madrid.
The press had a lot to feast on, considering the clout of the enigma that was being brought to their domain. Not only did the Chinese press find Beckham a delight to write about, it also wanted a feel of the palpable presence of the flank maestro.
Beckham's move form the legendary old Trafford, or what many pundits have termed "the theatre of dreams", was as controversial as it was exciting. The transfer saga was like nothing recorded in the recent history of football moves... MORE

In a string of mass congregations, the VHP has made clear its intentions to resuscitate the symbol not only in its spiritual dimensions but also materially, through the mass distribution of tridents among Hindus in Trishul-Diksha (ritual initiation in the use of the Trishul) programs. Its first such attempt in Rajasthan was a failure with the State Government ordering the arrest of Mr. Tagodia and slamming charges of treason against him. Released on bail on the understanding that he would initiate no further programs of the kind in Rajasthan, Tagodia moved to Delhi where an immensely successful Trishul Diksha was organized.ÝThe trident is essentially a weapon and the VHP's reputation for instigating communal riots throws a question mark over its motives for the trident program... ASSAM, INDIA - Controversy again grips the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council). Born of the need for political camouflage and steeped in the ideology of an atavistic xenophobia, the organization is not new to controversy. Indeed, its survival depends upon generating it. Starting with the state of Rajasthan, the organization makes no secret of its intentions. Its International President and General Secretary have time and again made clear the organization's intentions to replicate Gujarat where the forces of a resurgent fascism marched to electoral victory riding on the waves of hatred, dislocation and disenfranchisement created by a managed pogrom. And to recreate Gujarat, the organization has rejuvenated an ancient symbol of Hindu mysticism - the trident of Shiva. Mythed to reside on Mount Kailash, the Hindu Lord of serpents, of spirits (Bhoot-Nath), music, and letters, is also, ironically, the Lord of Destruction.

Stress 'r' us, once again. I'm not sure how to react to this latest development of my New Orleans saga. I've been encouraged to change addresses so that I'm not as easily accessible to police retribution. I've been encouraged to lay low and not visit my usual haunts for fear that I'll be harassed. Right now, I'm nonplussed and uncertain what is my best course between now and when the judge makes her ruling on my case's motions.

NEW ORLEANS - 2 September, 2003: If you can say one thing about New Orleans that one thing would be that it's a town that generates, indeed thrives on, drama. I got off work at the construction site today to learn that the cops who arrested me back in May went to Molly's at the Market at 2:00 a.m. to complain about the story that appeared in the Gambit regarding my case. I'm still trying to get all the details straight. The one thing I know right now is that they brought the story from the paper with them and complained that they were being victimized by the paper and me. (!) So now all hell has broken loose among the small circle of my neighbors. They accuse me of turning the case into a media event and bringing on the wrath of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD). No one recalls that I didn't seek out the Gambit reporter who wrote the story, Katy Reckdahl; she sought me out. I'm the bad guy because of the high drama that surrounds my effort to clear my name and be exonerated for a crime I did not commit.

Harris has a following, but in his mid-70s he remains something of an unknown quantity to all but those devoted jazz fans who make it a policy to pay attention to the new music from their elders.
In this sparkling album from Reservoir Music, Barry Harris, a superb pianist who has played an important role in the creation of some of jazzdom's most scintillating music, demonstrates emphatically that he's not ready for the expected small apartment in a housing project catering to seniors.
There's not a damned thing old about Barry Harris and, if you doubt that statement, just stick a copy of "Live in New York" on your CD audio equipment. Case proven and dismissed...MORE
MARIETTA, OH, USA - With nearly four months remaining in the year 2003, I've already made up my mind on the Powerssound Record of the Year. The choice came easy after I listened a couple of times to Barry Harris' delightful new CD, "Live in New York".

SOMEWHERE IN CA, USA - "It's not how far you fall, it's how high you bounce when you reach bottom."
I wish I knew who said that, because I have spent the last two years testing this theory and now know I have plenty of bounce in me. Two years ago when the Internet began to rock and rumble on an economy rollercoaster I thought that would be my biggest struggle. Staying on top and moving forward in the ever changing economy became my focus. Then life laughed at me by throwing me a bigger curve. I discovered that my biggest struggle wouldn't be about business but about life. I got cancer. The big "C" word that even with today's medical miracles brought fear and trepidation to my soul.
At first I thought, "Okay, no big deal. I'll have chemo, I'll run my business, everything will be fine." Keep in mind that I was a 17-hour a day working war horse that had workaholic stamped on my forehead. I was proud of that. I wasäuntil the real war started. The war with my body and soul that gave me back my life and taught me a great deal about running an efficient business along with having a real life... MORE

Subject: My N.O.P.D. story
Dear Rod:
I just finished reading your story in the Gambit Weekly dated Monday,
September 2, 2003. Let me tell you what happened to me. On Saturday, April
5, 2003 I was arrested by the N.O.P.D. The circumstances surrounding my
arrest are so far-fetched that my family and inner circle of friends are
absolutely dumbfounded. At approximately 9:45 P.M. I was traveling down
Almonaster Boulevard (which is in the industrial section of New Orleans
East). I approached the intersection of Almonaster Boulevard and Gentilly
Road and at that intersection there is a traffic signal. The traffic signal
was flashing red so I slowed down looked both ways and proceeded through the
intersection. I was the ONLY vehicle on Almonaster Boulevard... the ONLY
vehicle in sight. As I crossed through the intersection and approached the
"Chalmette" entry I noticed a vehicle (which came out of no where) following
close behind me with flashing red and white lights. I immediately began to
think, "Oh my God, the Louisiana serial rapist."... MORE
