G21 INTERVIEWS: HIAM ABBASS by BRAD BALFOUR
Yet the film that has put her in the middle of the most dramatic debate and, indirectly, in the spotlight, has been Steven Spielberg's controversial new film, "Munich." Though Abbas had one of the few female roles -- it was a relatively small one -- as the wife of an alleged Black September collaborator. Through her introduction to Speilberg, she joined his team behind the camera.
As she explained, "I had only been hired to do a small part -- to work two weeks at the beginning and two weeks at the end but after I met Steven he asked me to stay on as a technical advisor helping to make sure that things that were accurate whether they were Israeli or Palestinian."
Abbass got significant billing and a chance to work closely with Spielberg throughout the entire four months they were shooting his most controversial movie yet. "In meeting Steven, it created a
great relationship and he asked me to be a coach for the actors. as to whether they would do certain things in the right way in Hebrew or Arabic. I tech advised on that period, the language and culture."
G21: Does that put a feeling of responsibility on her shoulders in some way?
HA: Not really. What I dislike is representing "whoever, whenever, wherever." For me, I am an actress, and I get seduced by certain roles that I feel like doing with different directors that I like to work with. That's the way it goes for me. We can talk about what that kind of responsibility means but before being a Palestinian, I am an actress without an identity that follows me all my life. ... READ MORE
This is not news. Ever' since back in the 1970s, when Lorne Michael's made "Weekend Update" a regular feature on the NBC comedy show "Saturday Night Live," it's been taken as an article of faith that the news in America was mostly a Big Joke. It was only a matter of time, as far as Tabloid Hart is concerned, before jokes became the best way of how your average folks looked at the news - if they looked at the news at all. Like my bud Buford's wife says, "I don't watch the news. It's too depressin'."
News, to most Amurricans, if we really wannah look in the mirror, is what Tom Cruise did to some freakin' starlet half his age or what Nicolette Sheridan's been up to lately. That's why I've always sworn by the real newspaper of record for most of us livin' in trailer parks - (and what is the Federal Emergency Management Agency about to give devastated New Orleans, y'all? Trailer Parks) - is the National Enquirer. You get as much real news there as anywheres else.
Ya see, the thing is, other than a local house fire or somethin' along those lines, like the feller down the street goin' off his nut and taking a thirty-ought-six to his cousins and his cheatin' ex-wife, the only news we WANT to hear about is The Dirt. We don't care if Condoleeza Rice traipsed all over Europe in her stilettos saying that America has never condoned torture. Hell! We already know that any red-blooded Amurrican would torture a danged Afghani or Iraqi quicker than we mutilated redskins on the Amurrican plains. It's payback for 9/11. What we WANT to know is who is Condi boffing? She is Dubya's version of the Office Wife or what? Now that's NEWS. ... READ MORE

G21 WORLD HQ - We know it's a shocker. But after we polled our staff writers and the Mailing List Membership for nominees for our "Person of the Year 2005" the conclusion of undeniable, even if an anomaly; the person who topped our "Bottom Ten" list was also the person who most affected the history of the world in what our editorial page called "a Hellish year."
As one reader opined, NO ONE has more to do with how bad that year was than George W. Bush. Much as Time magazine had no choice in its selection, decades ago, to choose Adolf Hitler as its Person of the Year, much as we would have preferred to feature someone who was a force for Good on our cover -- and after much soul-searching -- we had to admit that the President of the United States (and, of course, his junta) had more to do with what had happened last year than any other single person on Earth.
Are you thinking this guy is the Anti-Christ? Just asking.
In a way, it seems fitting that Mr. Bush should be the choice for our last ever poll of our readership. He's always on their minds.
Let the Games begin!
The first person to write in with a "Person of the Year" nomination was Kim C. of Koh Samui, THAILAND. He wrote:
Hi Rod.My nomination for?person of the year is Mother Nature.
She who really kicked butt in 2005 and?put us all?back?in our places.
The one who left several indelible marks on the earth and humankind.
Brought out the worst and best in humans. Did the worst and best?for humankind.
In 2005 She is trying to tell us to listen to her.
She's shakin' her booty big-time.
From Clarius U., of Port Hartcourt, NIGERIA, we received:
MY NOMINEES:1) Mohamed El Baradei? for?his efforts to halt the spread of nuclear weapons.
2) Muammar El Ghadaffi of Libya for setting the pace in disarmament after years of terrorism.
Mpuhuthumi Ntabeni, of East London, SOUTH AFRICA, said:
For me the person who made a real contribution to the advancement of our humanity for his message on 'The Gospel Of Life' was Pope John Paul II. May God give rest to his soul.... READ MOREMpush
