Baltimore - 15 May, 2000 - I'm amused at times that some people, out of a voyeuristic tendency, read this column first. It seems that self-revelation is the wave of the day. But how many, like my friend Darryl, recognize how much I conceal by being self-revelatory? It's call "sleight-of hand." What I show you distracts you from the real story. That is what Magick is all about.

I have no desire to tell you *everything* and I don't believe you would have to the patience or interest in hearing it all, anyway.

As in my conversation with Darryl, I know that there are very important details of my story which I believe I've related, but that I leave out. I've had to recount it so many times over the years that I'm not even certain how much I've hidden and revealed or to whom. But that's part of the nature of story-telling and performing magic tricks, isn't it?

I refer to these weekly forays into your world as "events," because --- as a Japanese Webmaster told me many years ago --- that's what you expect here. You are seeking a performance on our part. You want us to entertain as much as inform. You expect a certain level of theatre in what we do.

http://www.thehungersite.com FEED THE HUNGRY. You can help someone else in this world and IT WON'T COST YOU A DIME. If you simply remember to drop by The Hunger Site every day that you surf and click a simple button ONE LESS PERSON WILL GO HUNGRY. The food is distributed by the United Nations World Food Programme and paid for through the sponsorship of companies that care. Do your part.

So these are my sliding screens. This is my make-up. Can you hearing the music coming up from the orchestra pit, right now?

For this evening, I am yours.

NETWORKING

Don't ask me how it began to happen, because I honestly don't know, but we have begun to be noticed and even courted by the emerging online "networks." These are sites that go out and aggregate "content providers" (a term I've always hated) and then sell advertising onto their sites and offer them tons of free services. Wow! I guess we're no longer just that "hip little FM station at the end of the dial" anymore.

You will notice, for example, that ALL banner ads are disappearing from our site this week.

I have a dilemma right now in that I was just about to print out an Agreement and fax off the signed deal when another suitor came along this weekend.

They're saying, "Hey! Hey! Wait a minute. We know you like these guys and you've been talking to them for weeks, but is this the best deal you can get?

"It's obvious to us why they want you. We want you for a lot of the same reasons.

"Give us a chance to show you why we have more to offer you and your writers."

As members of our Mailing List know, I was starting to consider Deal One done. I like the representative of that company and the fact that he really looks at what we have to offer.

STILL, I have a duty to the writers here to get them and the site the best arrangement I can. So I'm torn.

Meanwhile, if you visit our weekly promo page, you know that I've been tres busy dealing with queries and new submissions from some world-class additions to this effort. The fact is, my health problems have limited my ability to keep up.

That's why we're out late for the second week in a row.

Don't fret, though. I'm hanging in there. I have a doctor's appointment on Wednesday afternoon.

WEIRDNESS

IF you haven't already heard about this one, you HAVE to check it out. There is this guy down in Dallas, Texas, who officially and legally changed his name to DotComGuy. He moved into an empty apartment on 1 January of this year and has decided to stay there and online for one full year in order to prove a bet that you can now live entirely online.

All of his needs are provided for via e-commerce or not at all.

It had to happen, right?

Of course, TONS of Internet companies are sponsoring this site.

THINGS THAT BOTHER ME THIS WEEK

1. Being behind on EVERYTHING!!!
2. Facing being poked, prodded, and "explored" by a doctor. I hate needles and don't like having the integrity of my skin punctured.
3. No time for the reading I'd like to do.
4. Constant demands on my time.

Thanks for coming back this week.

"Love like you've never been hurt,
