SANTA ROSA, CA. - 19 July, 1998: After spending the better part of the past week in packing mode, being at rest for an instant seems quite the luxury. It would be more luxurious if I had not moved from the cool haven which is San Francisco to the scorching summer all the news programs have been talking about. The air density at midday here in the Wine Country is nothing short of stunning after living with the comfort of nightly fog and ocean breezes.
But, as I am reminded by a new song written by my friend, Terry Terrian, the road is calling to me again. I am succumbing to my legendary need to ramble. I do not use that word, "legendary," lightly. In a recent interview, with a headhunter looking for Web Editors, I was asked what cities I feel familiar with. A quick look at my autobio here reveals how amusing that question is for Yours Unruly. Besides the long list of cities where I have actually been resident, the list of cities I'm "familiar" with goes on for days. I have been such a rolling stone during this lifetime that where I am has most often been the phrase on peoples' lips. Let's see: Bermuda, Virginia, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Quebec, Italy, Egypt, Arkansas, California, Colorado... In the many of theh states listed, I have lived or made extended visits to multiple cities.
One of the first things my ex-wife and I agreed upon, when we first met, was that travel was a good thing. I knew I had made my match when she told me that she had run away to join the circus. We saw being mobile as an important part of our lives.
When we arrived back at my former flat, my ex-flatmate Joe had just telephoned and left word that I should contact him. Joe has just settled into a place in Nederland, Colorado, and asked if I'd consider being his roomie again.... It would be an easy move, and I always loved living in the Rockies. But Nederland is not New York.
I shall be alone for a while here.
My pal Terry, for whom I am here to housesit, leaves for Amsterdam on Thursday. From there he goes to Copenhagen, and then the music festival at which he will perform at the Mosstock Festival in Denmark. From there he will visit our buddy, John, who recently moved to Germany, take in Berlin, and then come back to the states. This will be the first time I've had an entire apartment to myself in a couple years. I mean to savor the luxury of these next few weeks. Then, again, hit the road.
But for now, let's discover what pearls an actual solitude, and communing with my own silence will have upon the song we play here.
One thing on the agenda is producing at least one feature three times a week. I have been leaning on THOMAS HART to carry the load. Or perhaps something completely new will materialize. Stay tuned.
Because we like you....
Be Good to Each Other,
Because of the number of butterflies which crossed my path yesterday, as we returned from getting coffee, my friend Terry commented that this latest move should be a good one for me. "Spirits of the Air," he commented about my spirit familiars, reminding me of when I first coined that phrase years ago to describe my affinity for butterflies. Like me, they move swiftly from flower to flower. I decided months ago that I had gotten all the nectar which San Francisco could afford me; it was time to move on.
We're glad you're here. We have a lot to offer this(and EVERY) week. Stick around. More importantly: TELL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS. We want you here EVERY DAY.
WHY?
