SANTA ROSA, CA. - 1 August, 1998: Yours Unruly is certainly glad to see you back with us this week, even though --- if you follow JENNIFER BLUE's PLANTARY MADNESS column --- the Mercury Retrograde influence is bound to screw up our communications.
Being a publisher, meaning that my entire Life is about communication, means flying into the face of such entrail-readings and continuing to put the magazine out every day.
A classic restless mind is my pal, Portuguese Soul Brother, and source of Reality Checks, Dove DoVale. He and I have been exchanging phone calls over the three days preceding this Pub' Note, about living situations. He and his family are looking at buying a new house, still in Oregon but not necessarily in the town they have lived in these last few years. Or not buying one. Dove agonizes over what effects each of these decisions will have on this budget, his young children....
As you know, if you are a Loyal Reader here, moving to New York looms on This Writer's horizon, UNLESS I succumb to the climactic and other seductions of remaining in northern California --- an issue to be resolved during this next two weeks. The Colorado offer still stands, of course.
Thus, I find myself more and more focused on the conundrums of everyday life. Moving, jobs, friendships extant and imminent, friendships possibly lost, what moving to the East Coast from the Est Coast will mean, the potential for new adventures and new love affairs, the plums dangling in San Francisco now that I have left her, pots of gold at the end of the New York City rainbow...
Last week the magazine was exhausting, this week I am quickly exhausted by the details of my own life. I suspect that part of the problem is pretending that I still have the energy of a 36 year old when I am a decade older.
"You are talking about The Gold Mountain, my friend!"
Perhaps I am.
IN THIS ISSUE: K.O., our Sports columnist, devotes his effort to analyzing the angst for Red Fox Fans that the Mo Vaughn Saga is causing..... And K.O. gives you a double dose this week via his on-going hate affair with New York Yankees fans. Are the Yanks' defenders right about the weepy, low-self-esteem of Red Sox fans? Find out as ADAM SMITH & K.O. take off the gloves in this edition's SPORTS EXTRA!(I'm starting to feel like maybe I should move to Hartford, just to maintain my Switzerland-like neutrality here.).... BOB POWERS is back with a new, diverse format for POWERSSOUND.... And all your favorite writers continue to strut their stuff.
WHY?
Because we like you....
Be Good to Each Other,
So as this new weekly edition kicks off, Your Unruly is thinking about Restless Minds.
We're glad you're here. We have a lot to offer this(and EVERY) week. Stick around. More importantly: TELL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS. We want you here EVERY DAY.
