SANTA ROSA, CA. - 9 August, 1998: It would appear that I have begun to take my role as "head writer" at this magazine a bit more seriously. All one would have to do is look at my on-going reporting on the Cambodian election and my contributions to our new DAY ONE feature to figure that out. I have found this change in my status at the magazine both more exhilarating and more exhausting. I don't have a clue about how my writers feel about their editor putting his hand back in.
Frankly, sometimes I suspect that they would never be honest with me about the topic.

It's finally cooled a little here in the Wine Country, just in time for my pal Terry to return from Europe. Last I heard he was trekking through Berlin.... AND I had a telephone conversation(corporality!) with Adam Smith this weekend. Adam is in San Francisco, en route to Oregon, then Los Angeles. There is a slim possibility that we will do an f2f, a rare thing for the far-flung G-crew. I won't hold my breath, of course, as meeting any of our writers remains something I envision wistfully.... after we get an angel ... or enough hits to make our advertisers happy....
WHY?
Because we like you....
Be Good to Each Other,
Even though we don't "do" thematic editions anymore, I have found myself drifting back to giving a theme-like title to each edition based on how the initial crop of submissions make me feel.
Thus, HARD STORIES this week. We have a series of articles awaiting you which I'm very proud of, and feel are in our best tradition. TABLOID HART takes a slight departure from jocularity with Tom's coverage of the latest developments in the JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation. It's certainly in his purview to go there, but he drifts toward real journalism with his latest submission. Kindah scary. And Dan Vandemortel, of Morrison & Foerster LLP, provides another contribution to our Northern Ireland coverage which I hope you will visit. In a very special piece, Dan --- a member of the Kevin Artt defence team --- rates the United States Congress's performance on human rights issues effecting Northern Ireland. Each of these stories is the type of in-depth, serious analysis of the news which makes me proud to be part of this enterprise. I would appreciate getting your backfeed on any or all of these stories.
Should G21 begin Monicagate coverage?
We're glad you're here. We have a lot to offer this(and EVERY) week. Stick around. More importantly: TELL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS. We want you here EVERY DAY.
