F'get About It!

Publisher's Notes

New York - 9 December, 1998 - You would think that with the onset of the Holiday Season things would be slowing down. Not at The World's Magazine.

Firstly, we've picked up a new roving correspondent and editor, BRAD BALFOUR, who is checking in with Sun Microsystem's Scott McNeely at the Java Expo being held at the Javits Center in the Big Apple even as I type this Note. Brad was publisher/editor-in-chief of the music magazine New Review of Records (which eventually mutated into New Review , Music , Media and More), and his work has appeared in CREEM and SPIN. Brad will also be doing some of the copy editing chores around here to take part of the load off Yours Unruly.

And tomorrow, sometimes contributor and my colleague at Andover News, ROBIN MILLER will be in town for the Java conference along with a charter of other propeller heads. I plan to spend some time with him before dashing off to cover the New York New Media Association(NYNMA) holiday shindig. Obviously, NYNMA will be my entree to the "Silicon Alley" types and you'll read more about that here next week.

Being on this coast means that I will be seeing more of the writers for the World's Magazine than I ever have. Besides Robin, PHIL MARTIN writes to let me know he'll be coming to New York in a couple months, BRYAN POWERS lives right over in Brooklyn, ADAM SMITH is a native and visits The City frequently, and I suspect this is just the beginning of my f2f encounters with members of the G-crew.

We are now officially in Countdown Mode. No, silly! Not to the Holidays, they're all around us. Rather, we are counting down to the 150th weekly edition of this magazine (we gave up on counting issues back when we were coming out daily.) 150 weeks on the Web --- who would have thunk it when we started this endeavor in March, 1996?

It also appears that The World's Magazine is beginning to make it onto the radar screens of The Big Guys.

In this week's e-mail we received an offer to enter into a content-provider relationship with a new comedy "channel" being set up under the Alta Vista umbrella. It seems somebody over at AV thinks we have a sense of humor around here. (Imagine my bad Joe Pesci imitation here:) "They think we are funny. What? Do we make you laugh? Do you think we're clowns?"

... And there's been loose talk bandied about recently suggesting that Yours Unruly could produce a dead-tree book in my "spare time." (As if I have any spare time?)

The G-Crew Elsewhere: Many of our Loyal Readers are aware that the G-Crew is an active bunch (look at all our collective writing credits on and off the 'Net) but some of you may not be aware of just how active.

For example, FLISS USSHER also works for the U.K.'s IT TV Network, while supplying her superb writing skills here. JEFF WINBUSH offers his scathing commentary to the editors at Salon Magazine this week. And MARIE IRSHAD has her own site where you can get another fix of her reportorial skills.

ABOUT THIS EDITION: I think the Publisher needs to start slapping the Editor around a bit. There are actually ELEVEN new features in this Edition. F'get about it! That's way too much new content for us to be offering you during your busy holidays. Who's going to have time to read all that?

On the off chance that you do, you are in for a real treat! I recommend MARIE IRSHAD's latest WELSH TAKE which reports on the double standard too often exhibited toward people with mental disabilities, and RAHEEM's totally hilarious admonition to *me.* There's also wonderful stuff from BOB POWERS, DAN VANDEMORTEL, MATT STOWELL, "LADY B," BRAD BALFOUR, and ADAM J. SMITH. Did I leave anyone out? Don't think so. Enjoy!

Thanks for coming back this week.

We're glad you're here. We have a lot to offer this (and EVERY) week. Stick around. More importantly: TELL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS. We want you here EVERY DAY.

WHY?

Because we like you....

Be Good to Each Other,
Rod
