Publisher's Note

New York - 2 March, 1999: Putting together this first Edition of our Anniversary month, I spent a lot of time gauging how comfortable I feel with the new look of the magazine. We have been in rapid change-and-adjust mode here at the World's Magazine, which has meant many of more hours of design work for Yours Unruly. I believe I'm beginning to feel comfortable with the new format, if not entirely with our new advertising model.

"Ehm.... 'new advertising model?'" Yup. As long-time Loyal Rooters here know, I was against banner ads from way back. I still consider them an abomination. And --- as my pal, Robin Miller editorializes over at the A List Apart site --- they're just plain dumb. So I decided a few months back to go with an "in-line" ad model. The editorial wrapped around the advertising "hole," as we used to say in the newspaper game. Those magazine ads on some the pages is the result. Is it working? Too early to tell.

It's less obtrusive than those banners by a long-shot. Let me know what you think.

Another site made on a Macintosh On March 24, 1999, with the launch of Edition #161 we'll have come to you in an uninterrupted stream for Three Years. We hope you'll be around for our Gala Anniversary Edition and invite your friends to come see us, as well. It promises to be quite a party.

Moving you in that direction, I premiere a new New York Nightlife feature called NEW YORK STATE Of Mind. It begins with a look at Sean Altman and The Muscular Band performing at SoHo's Arlene Grocery, here in the Manhattan. It also includes a review of Altman's new CD "Seandemonium." In upcoming developments, we'll be retiring the name BARE KNUCKLES as JEFF WINBUSH slips into this new feature BLACK INK this month. And at mid-month look for a special report from new G21 ASIA contributor, SUBIR GOSH writing from India on the Congress Party's Sonia Gandhi. We hope you'll welcome all the new innovations we plan to pepper our Third Anniversary Month Celebration with...

"Where's the personal stuff this week?" Well, the fact is, I'm not feeling very *personal* this week. A lot is going on on the professional side of my life right now, one facet of which you'll discover on the VOX POPULI page, so I've been a little preoccupied with that. In fact, a gaggle of the writers here ("Justices Hart, Raheem, Martin and Winbush" --- Thanks for that one, Jeff! --- gave Yours Unruly quite a tongue-lashing in our private Conference for my inability to take compliments with grace. I am duly chastised.)

Let's just say that the move to Manhattan is proving to be everything right career-wise that life in San Francisco was not. As my intuition suggested, people on the Right Coast respect achievement a lot more than flair..... I've never been a flashy guy, but I do have chops.

ABOUT THIS EDITION:

We have ELEVEN (11) new features for you again in this Edition.

FLISS USSHER comes back strong from her brief hiatus to produce two new features for this Edition, both LONDON CALLING! and a special feature for DAY ONE. HOUSE OF CARDS has new Jokes from BOB POWERS and Loyal Reader "LADYB." BRYAN POWERS is back in THE AISLE SEAT with a review of **200 Cigarettes**. And there's a lot more to enjoy, so stick around.

Thanks for coming back this week.

We're glad you're here. We have a lot to offer this (and EVERY) week. Stick around. More importantly: TELL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS. We want you here EVERY DAY.

WHY?

Because we like you...
