New York - 20 April, 1999: This Edition of the magazine is "explosive," as our cover claims, because we bring you what is probably the most comprehensive view of the conflict in the Balkans --- from the Serbian point of view --- presented anywhere on or off the Internet.
My colleague, DRAGANA VICANOVIC, spent Monday night --- during the ongoing NATO bombing --- producing this DAY ONE article without sleeping in order to make this week's deadline. I've tried to clean up, editorially, what she jocularly refers to as "War & Peace" so that you get the meaning of her assertions.
The litany of missteps, policy reversals, and out-right lies she presents in this extended essay is compelling. The accompanying photographs are brutally graphic depictions of the results of this war which I had problems preparing for the Web. (The Adobe Photoshop chores.)
RASTISLAV DURMAN is back from Slovakia this week, as well, with a more satirical, black-humorist take on the conflict.
THOMAS HART, meanwhile, presents an opposing view from those of the Yugoslavs and says that the USA is wasting time in not intensifying the war in the former-Yugoslavia.
We remain a magazine of diverse voices and opinions, a course I believe you would expect The World's Magazine to continue following.
I've been pushing to get this out tonight, Tuesday instead of Wednesday, because I go on a scouting expedition down to Maryland tomorrow to ascertain if that is where I shall want to live next. I surprised most of my friends and the writers here, this past week, by revealing that I am of a mind to move again. My Hegira is not over.
My options are open. I could stick with Manhattan a while longer, despite the Byzantine New York DMV requirements to "exist" (I'm writing an Op-Ed piece for the New York Timesor Village Voicewhen I get back in town. Thanks, and a tip of the hat to my pal, Darryl) because I still love this city...
OR I could finally take Robin Miller's advice and live nearer the heart of The Beast --- meaning the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., axis...
OR I could take "professional" drunkard Matt Stowell's advice and move to The Big Easy (a.k.a. N'Orleans, LA.)
Hell, I don't know.
I took a poll this week and everybody said I should just admit that Cali has become my home and move back to San Francisco.
BUT they don't even let you smoke IN BARS in California anymore, and that's about all a man can take.
There's gottah be some way to scratch this itch.
Oh yeah! I forgot to mention that there are more of your fave obsession, wacky bumper stickers, in FAX NIKITA this week. And the jokes in the HOUSE OF CARDS had me ROTFLMAO. Check 'em out.
We're glad you're here. We have a lot to offer this (and EVERY) week. Stick around. More importantly: TELL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS. We want you here EVERY DAY.
WHY?
Because we like you...
Work like you don't need the money,
