Don't Read Me First

G21 INSIDER

Naked Came the Stranger

Publisher's Note

New York - 11 May, 1999 - I was supposed to be rocking along on a train to Baltimore right now, to visit my friend ROBIN MILLER and his lovely wife Debbie, and finally land an apartment in the city which will be my next home.

Yes, that Baltimore. I'm moving to Maryland at the end of the month, Kids. Decision taken.

I do not leave Manhattan lightly. I still love this town, but I don't relish the notion of spending the next year looking and looking for the "right" apartment. This one wasn't it for any number of reasons. But I think the main one is how isolated it is from "the action." I'm way, way uptown.... AND well, maybe I should admit that I don't have the patience anymore to put up with the capricious housekeeping which goes with having roommates.

My journalistic work, by which I keep body and soul together, is extremely demanding of my time. As is this magazine. I just don't have the temperament anymore for the "surprises" other people's lives, organization (and/or lack there of,) can potentially throw into my schedule.... So Baltimore, where the economics are such that I can have an entire house, if I want one, for what I pay for a single room here in Manhattan. It was just a matter of doing the math...

I took the pledge You will note that with this Edition we go to a "new" look that is a hybrid of my latest Webslinger experiments and the rather "staid" look that I adopted earlier this year. My hope is that this change will make our pages both easier to assimilate and much more printer-friendly (a special request from JEFF WINBUSH.)

I hope you'll approve of the new design model. But, if you don't, let me know. I do listen to suggestions and recommendations. Implementation sometimes takes a while, but we aren't going away, so the time will come.

Also with this new edition, our 168th, you'll find some new features like CHROUILLE HANE, a very ... unusual piece of work, and the return of an old favorite (of some people --- Dmitri, Matthew, Jen) CHARLIE THE TUNA's SEX COLUMN. Let see how long he lasts this time out. The Winking Smiley Face

Meanwhile, I 'm beginning to believe that RASTISLAV DURMAN, DRAGANA VICANOVIC and KEVIN CAREY should be added to our roster of writers. Rasti claims that each of his "Game Behind the Bombs" telephone calls will be his last. Then, right at deadline, he tosses me another one. Dragana will keep writing no matter what, if just to hold back the Dark Pit of uncertainty and fear which characterize her daily life in Belgrade. At least this week, she tells me privately, a night went by in Belgrade where there were no air-raid alarms.... And Kevin Carey? Well, I think it's only a matter of time before we work out an arrangement where's he's a regular here.

Another site made on a Macintosh You know what's odd for me? I was thinking about this just the other night: Everywhere I go, I'm always The Stranger. Part of the reason for this week's theme. I am rootless, it seems, always exploring. The Knight Errant... Perhaps this will change with B'more, but I doubt it.

Standing outside of the normal conventions of family and community gives you a very different perspective on your environment. I'll explore these issues with you the next time a DAY ONE slot comes open.

Well, Kidlings, I'm exhausted, as we have another MAMMOTH issue of new features for your amusement and amazement. So, con permisso, I'll go ahead and launch now. Bon appetit!

Thanks for coming back this week.

We're glad you're here. We have a lot to offer this (and EVERY) week. Stick around. More importantly: TELL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS. We want you here EVERY DAY.

WHY?

Because we like you...

Work like you don't need the money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
Dance like no one is watching,
Rod
