Religion

Publisher's Note

Baltimore - 14 July, 1999 - It's a good thing I decided not to hype the introduction of a new religion in AMERICAN DREAMS as the writer in question was so busy with other writing assignments on his Day Job that he couldn't get the piece to me this week. And then another writer, having pitched a piece on Matt Hale, wrote to say that he couldn't meet the deadline either, the article had turned into something altogether different in focus, and so on.

A couple other members of the team decided they didn't want to chance exposing their apathy on this theme --- or take the risk of braving the brickbats. So this edition turned out, at the Eleventh Hour, to be something other than what I believed from our e-mail exchanges last week. With our brutal deadlines here that's bound to happen from time to time. I'm almost inured.

I took the pledge I still believe we have a good mix for your consideration this week. The angles from which the theme is approached are disparate and thought-provoking. I especially recommend the DAY ONE companion pieces by myself and KEVIN CAREY.

It's not all serious, though. POWERSSOUND has a slough of great music CD reviews, and FAX NIKITA has strange facts about the laundry product Bounce (tm.)

For my part this week, I'd like to solicit your opinions as we plan our Summer Cleaning campaign.

Another site made on a Macintosh I'm of the opinion that HOUSE OF CARDS, where we feature the Jokes of the Day, has lost some of its cachet. We've been running Jokes now for almost four years, so we have produced a canonical collection, but interest in the newer entries --- if our server stats can be believed --- seems to be waning.

The secondary conclusion that I'm reaching is that we should focus our efforts more and give greater support to our strongest features. While I was the biggest champion of producing a "general interest" magazine for most of our existence, I'm now beginning to lean toward a narrower approach.

So I'm asking you to e-mail me with your impressions. What features do you think are superfluous and which ones do you think exemplify what this Web magazine does best? If you were running The World's Magazine, what would you keep and what would jettison? I'd sincerely like to know.

Thanks for coming back this week.

Work like you don't need the money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
Dance like no one is watching,
