Jokers Wild

Publisher's Note

Baltimore - 20 July, 1999 - You read the cover correctly. This is the final edition in which The World's Magazine will feature our Jokes of the Day page, HOUSE OF CARDS. We've been running reader-submitted Internet jokes for nearly four years now and I have the sense that the cycle should conclude.

Yes, I know long-term Loyal Rooters will recall that I tried to pull this hat-trick once before. It didn't take. I continued to get bombarded with people's jokes. But this time it is WRITTEN IN STONE. The three pages featured in this, our 176th edition of the magazine, are the final three jokes pages GENERATOR 21 shall ever feature.

This is the beginning of the general house-cleaning and re-focusing of the magazine I alluded to in last week's ever-so-popular edition. After 371 weeks on the Web, I think I've earned the right to re-purpose my Toy Store.

Which means, we will be wandering away from the All-Things, One-Size model and getting more focused. Some will take this as a sign of maturity.

I took the pledge So the next issue will feature other changes to our offerings. The DAILIES page, while working for our readers abroad when it was instituted, is redundant now that we have stream-lined our main TOC page, MAIN EVENT. This is also the last edition where you'll find that one.

You can also say "Good-bye" to FAX NIKITA. It was a noble experiment, but its most successful run was when we did the canonical list of Bumper Stickers. History.

Another site made on a Macintosh ABOUT THIS ISSUE: The JULES SIEGEL INTERVIEW is our centerpiece. We're very proud to bring one of the America's premiere commentators to this page, in association with our friends at BlueEar.com.

But that's not all! The Libertarian Party will put us on their shite list, I expect, after reading WOLF DE VOON's extended post-mortem on their recent shifts (and twists, and turns, and shakes.) Considering that many of the writers here are self-avowed Libertarians, I'm surprised that Wolf went there.

All-in-all, I think you'll look back at the ten new features of this edition as the beginning of our new direction. Enjoy!

Marat in his bath after Charlotte Corday.MORE BACKGROUND STUFF: We're moving back toward the fresh. Expect to see some very interesting thematic issues over the next few months, more interviews, and some writers from places you would not expect. It's time to expand the mandate of being The World's Magazine.

At the same time, it's time for more caprice. Rodya following his Muses... "Message to The People!"

Somebody turn up the background music. Is that a little do-wop I hear? Oh man! It's Big Sean!

Just think of yourself as the missing link in the daisy chain of pain
And remember:
It's my Miserable Destiny,
The one piece of Future that I can see
It's my Fate, my Doom, my guarantee
To hurt you, Baby, the way my baby hurt me---

---Sean Altman

He's playing my theme-song. That's cool.

"Yo, Rod! Weren't you writin' the magazine intro?"

So expect a new ride, coming to its fruition as we move into the fall. But it won't be bumpy, just unique. This will be your new playground. Stay tuned.

Thanks for coming back this week.

Work like you don't need the money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
Dance like no one is watching,
Rod
