Publisher's Note

Baltimore - 12 September, 1999 - I have been spending my evenings with Tacitus lately. I find digesting his catalogue of Imperial Rome a great counterpoint to the mundane events of my own days and the horrific events of the world's. Suddenly East Timor has made it onto the radar screens of the Mouthpiece Media after years of neglect. If you wanted to hear about the struggle for independence, and the suffering of the Tigers at the hands of the US-trained Indonesian military, you had to seek out "alternative" publications like this one. Now a few UN underlings have joined the long list of victims of a sham referendum and the story is important enough for CNN --- this week.

KEVIN CAREY has some rather scathing things to say about the situation --- while tying it to the continuing Troubles in Northern Island --- in this week's DAY ONE.

While those of you on our Mailing List ponder the September Readership Poll on whether we should inaugurate a new Policy section of The World's Magazine, we are once again giving you cannon fodder for thought about other parts of the world.

http://www.thehungersite.com FEED THE HUNGRY. You can help someone else in this world and IT WON'T COST YOU A DIME. If you simply remember to drop by The Hunger Site every day that you surf and click a simple button ONE LESS PERSON WILL GO HUNGRY. The food is distributed by the United Nations World Food Programme and paid for through the sponsorship of companies that care. Do your part.

Our other regular features are back, too, of course. We hope you'll find they provide the kind of insight and trenchant commentary you have grown accustomed to. Meanwhile, we look forward to your thoughts on the Poll.

I'm particularly proud of the success of our newest feature, MEMOIRS OF THE INFORMATION AGE. Our server logs show that you like it and visit it often. So, as a special treat this week, we feature a conversation with one of the more influential (and controversial) figures shaping the future of the Info Age, Ms. Esther Dyson of the newly formed Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the international body meant to take over the Domain Name System from Network Solutions, Inc. So much has been reported aboutMs. Dyson that we thought it was time to do what we do best --- bring you the subject herself.

I finally achieved the goal of *not* writing this Note as my last chore of pre-publication. You know what? It feels weird. I'm not sure I'll do this again...

REMEMBER: Tell every single one of your friends about this Web site. My mother thanks you, my father thanks you, my advertisers thank you.

Thanks for coming back this week.

Work like you don't need the money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
Dance like no one is watching,
Rod
