Baltimore - 3 October, 1999 - Because of the "compassion fatigue" so easily engendered here in America, once the war in the Balkans ended --- and because of the loss of readership we experienced here at The World's Magazine --- we discontinued our coverage of the area.

*Table Background courtesy of Jeffrey Zeldman Presents.But my friend, and our Special Correspondent, DRAGANA VICANOVICH and I have stayed in contact. We trade long letters about the history of the ancient world, an interest we have in common. And we talk about life on the ground in the former Yugoslavia.
Her report on the protests in Belgrade over the last two weeks, and the reaction of the Milosevic regime, is so important that I have to go against your seeming fatigue. As my Man , Kevin Moore, said when reading them today: "Take out the name 'Milosevic.' Take away the dates and city names and you have no clue that this is not about Nazi Germany!"
"This is horrible."
I agree. I think you will,too. This is a story we have to cover.
But I've made the report like an "Easter Egg."
FEED THE HUNGRY. You can help someone else in this world and IT WON'T COST YOU A DIME. If you simply remember to drop by The Hunger Site every day that you surf and click a simple button ONE LESS PERSON WILL GO HUNGRY. The food is distributed by the United Nations World Food Programme and paid for through the sponsorship of companies that care. Do your part.
Looking for a little political humor? Here's a site passed on to me that you might enjoy: GW BUSH. This weasel deserves this type of coverage. Enjoy!
LIFE OF ROD:
RésuméRazors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live. ---Dorothy ParkerDorothy Parker is probably one of the most under-rated writers of the 20th Century, and she is one of my personal icons.
So I find it humorous, now, after all the years of believing that I would grow up to be a celebrated fiction writer (a childhood dream because of all the wonderful hours of diversion and relief which fiction writers gave me) that I woke up one morning to discover that I was a journalist.
I'm still not reconciled to the situation. But I soldier on, hoping that one day I'll realize the dream.
In the meantime, I am at your service.
I think about all this because the members of The World's Magazine's Mailing List and I are conversing about the People of the Millennium.
This is the Parlour Game we are playing as the G21 October Readership Poll. We are composing a "Top Ten" list of the same which we'll share with all of you in our 25 October edition.
REMEMBER: Tell every single one of your friends about this Web site. Me mother thanks you, me father thanks you, me advertisers thank you.
Thanks for coming back this week."Work like you don't need the money,
"Love like you've never been hurt,
"Dance like no one is watching..."
