Baltimore - 11 October, 1999 - The last page. I was beginning to wonder if I would ever make it here this week.

To give you an idea of how fragile my production schedule is between this Web magazine and my outside publishing efforts, one little three hour appointment on Friday afternoon threw me off by over 24 hours. Yeah. I have to produce that much new copy, or edit same, every freakin' week. My fingers ache.

The Good News is that we have some wonderful new material for your delectation in this week's edition of The World's Magazine.

Even better, from my personal perspective (and probably that of the writers here) is that our numbers (hits) are up significantly. You seem to like our new direction, and that's good. Now if I could just find the time for more of the design enhancements I had planned....

Oh well, until that time, I'm very pleased with some of the powerful writing and reporting that our team is producing these days.

http://www.thehungersite.com FEED THE HUNGRY. You can help someone else in this world and IT WON'T COST YOU A DIME. If you simply remember to drop by The Hunger Site every day that you surf and click a simple button ONE LESS PERSON WILL GO HUNGRY. The food is distributed by the United Nations World Food Programme and paid for through the sponsorship of companies that care. Do your part.

ABOUT THIS ISSUE: It's a tougher call than usual for me this week, as RASTISLAV DURMAN, KEVIN CAREY and BOB POWERS have all produced articles which you'd be nuts to miss. Each, in his own beat, offers sterling gems of insight, biting commentary, and excellent reportage. All I can say is, "Check 'em out."

Meanwhile, my long overdue BEST OF G21 feature finally premieres this week. This is where you can see some of the wonderful writing featured here back in the days before we acquired our own Domain Name, over two years ago. Our first feature is an article from 1996 by former staffer MOIRA GUINESS. MG is a pseudonym for an old Asia hand who hails from Mystic, Connecticut, and wrote for The World's Magazine from late 1996 until she relocated to Laos in 1998. I think you'll enjoy her style as much as we always did.

A very naughty child.LIFE OF ROD: After a couple weeks of being very disgruntled, fuzzy, harried and unfocused, I'm feeling a little better these days, thanks.

I'm sorry, but a couple of things have been chapping my ass. One is so-called "personal friends" of mine who don't take the time to visit this decade-long Life Project on a regular basis. Hell! I don't expect my friends to read every single issue, but is once a month too much to ask? I don't think so.

Secondly, I actually feel like I'm about to puke almost anytime I check out the Mouthpiece Media. I would like to be an informed citizen, but all those horse's backsides have to offer me is second-rate gossip, the latest house fire in town, and bleed, bleed, bleed. As KEVIN CAREY so often laments of late, WITH MY WHOLE-HEARTED SUPPORT, where is ANY "news" that has anything to do with public policy or the major events of the day? Can somebody help me here?

End Rant.

I think part of my recent uplift comes from my "wild hair" plan to spend the Y2K season in Europe. New Year's Eve is my ALL-TIME favorite holiday, but I have not had a good one in years now. I plan to make a valiant attempt for the "party like it's 1999" version.

Besides, it will give me a chance to meet some of our writers from Europe f2f. It will get me away from some of the routine of my life for awhile. That's always a good thing, yes?

With any luck, I'll be able to share a good bottle of red wine with FELICITY USSHER, track down the elusive and droll RASTISLAV DURMAN, spend time crawling over the Roman era ruins with DRAGANA VICANOVICH and ooh! and ahh! over her husband Dragan's Roman coin collection. Who knows? I may even have time for a side trip to Berlin to harass my old pal and fellow publisher, DAVID HUDSON.

The only challenge I see is getting a visa into the former Yugoslavia. Wish me luck.

REMEMBER: Tell every single one of your friends about this Web site. Me mother thanks you, me father thanks you, me advertisers thank you.

Thanks for coming back this week.

EDITORIAL CORRECTIONS: This is getting too good to be true. Another week without corrections. I'm sure I must have screwed up this week. Cheers.
