G21 WORLD HQ - We decided to try a new type of Poll for 2005 with the Members of the World's Magazine Mailing List. We asked our subscribers to complete the sentence: "I believe the purpose of human life and consciousness on Earth is ... "

The results were underwhelming. It would appear that our Mailing List -- and even casual readers invited to take part -- did NOT find this poll very compelling.

We learned something from the experience.

Herewith, all four (4) of the responses we did receive.

Ric W. of Austin, TX, USA wrote:

"I believe the purpose of human life and consciousness on Earth is...to waste as little time as possible on single issue polls." to love ... to be loved ... to see beauty ... to create beauty ... to help those less able to help ... to be helped ... to know that we need each other ... that we are needed ... that we need ... that everything has its place ... to find our place ... to let others find their place ... to practice compassion ... to heal ... to be healed ... to let god do god's business & to know that murder is murder & no god that is worthy of worship would ask his servant to murder for him ... to do as little harm as possible so there will continue to be a world to contemplate ... to dream of such a world ... to make that world happen in every action ... to live one breath at a time ... to be alive to joy generosity dance & grief ... to allow mystery to wrap its arms around you & show you things you never thought possible even unto the moment you breathe your complete soul out entirely into a world that is ever practicing a divine creation ...

G21 Africa's NGOZI RAZAK-SOYEBI of Lagos, NIGERIA said this:
Dear Rod,

I believe the purpose of human life and consciousness on earth is for the good of mankind.

Cheers,
Ngozi

Len R., of Laguna Beach, CA, USA told us this:
... the intentional grappling with the question of the purpose of human live and consciousness on Earth." (IOW, the purpose is not given to us, rather we need to give the purpose to it.)

And, finally, G21 AFRICA's MPUTHUMI NTABENI said this:
I believe the purpose of human life and consciousness on Earth is to learn to love and thus awaken our consciousness to our divine like nature.

From the Editor's Desktop

As implied above, I obviously stepped in it when attempting this amorphous and non-Hot Button poll.

You would think that after more or less successfully running these polls for over a decade, both off- and online, I might have sensed what a stinker this one would be. As I said, "lesson learned."

I made the decision to publish the results for two reasons:

  1. I owed it to those who did take the time to respond to "print" their responses because I'd committed to do so in this edition, and;
  2. I'll always believed that I should be as forthcoming in these pages about failures as triumphs.
When I consider the success of the "Bottom 10" lists we've compiled over the years and that it took us over two (2) years to move our readership to picking a "Person of the Year," I believe I've gotten a message. You'll find our second poll for 2005 below. Wish me luck!

Thanks to all those who took the time to respond to our latest poll.

The G21 READERSHIP POLL

There's a certain Guilty Pleasure -- for both our readers and our writers, we've noticed -- about being able to "dish" as the trendy phrase used to go. So this poll gives you the chance to "go negative" once again.

But to add to your level of difficulty, your List can only have five (5) items, rather than the usual ten (10).

THE POLL QUESTION: What five trends, clichés, people in the news would you like to see disappear from the culture radar IMMEDIATELY?

DEADLINE: 30 April, 2005. The responses and results will appear in our "Summer Reading" edition at the end of May. Thanks in advance!

Our floral line.
