As one reader opined, NO ONE has more to do with how bad that year was than George W. Bush. Much as Time magazine had no choice in its selection, decades ago, to choose Adolf Hitler as its Person of the Year, much as we would have preferred to feature someone who was a force for Good on our cover -- and after much soul-searching -- we had to admit that the President of the United States (and, of course, his junta) had more to do with what had happened last year than any other single person on Earth.
Are you thinking this guy is the Anti-Christ? Just asking.
In a way, it seems fitting that Mr. Bush should be the choice for our last ever poll of our readership. He's always on their minds.
Let the Games begin!
My nomination for?person of the year is Mother Nature.
She who really kicked butt in 2005 and?put us all?back?in our places.
The one who left several indelible marks on the earth and humankind.
Brought out the worst and best in humans. Did the worst and best?for humankind.
In 2005 She is trying to tell us to listen to her.
She's shakin' her booty big-time.
1) Mohamed El Baradei? for?his efforts to halt the spread of nuclear weapons.
2) Muammar El Ghadaffi of Libya for setting the pace in disarmament after years of terrorism.

My choice: Jeff Skoll
Skoll probably did not have the greatest positive impact, but since you are never having another poll (REALLY???) I am nominating him because he has made strides towards good ends and I HOPE he continues to have increasing influence. He is using two mediums, among others, that seem to work; movies - and money.
That's my nomination.
Tom
I remember thinking, "So if the bullet is 200 miles wide, who gives it shit if it is 30 miles to the right of bull's eye?"
Bush's mask came off when the world looked thru the eyes of Katrina into his heartless soul.
Really do admire Tony Dungy and the way he's led the Colts and the way he's handled his son's death. He is a real class act.
(The Bucs super bowl win was all about the team he built and didn't get a chance to coach for the year they won)
Since this is your last poll, I'll take part. I never liked polls. I definitely never liked that polls were part of your ezine.
So, since I know you consider yourself a logician as well as a rhetoritician (gotcha!), I'll present you with a bit of unassailable logic ... and an anomaly. For my money, your Person of the Year has already been made your Bottom 10 winner of the year. Ha-ha!
Look at 2005. NOBODY ON EARTH has more of the disastrous results of this year coming to their doorstep than George W. Bush. London Bombing? New government in Spain? Death of New Orleans? The messes of death and suffering in Iraq and Afghanistan? Putin's power-grab? The whole mess of Israel-Palestine from the settlers being bum-rushed to the Wall around Bethlehem? Leaders killing off their dissidents and rebels by calling it part of the "Global War on Terror" (GWOT) from Kazahzstan to Papua?
Who else's doorstep can put these at than George W. Bush's? The ONLY thing to affect 2005 more than Georgie Boy was the damned tsunami last year!
That's the anomaly, Rod. Think of it like when TIME magazine put Hitler on their cover. Same difference. What do you think!
Happy New Year,
I'd either choose Rosa Parks, a great woman who shaped the world not just this year but forever or the Tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands in Asia.
Happy New Year to YOU, Rod. You provide a service that makes all of our lives better. Never forget that!
Love,
I think to me the person of the year is the Late Sudanese Vice President -- Col Garang de Mabior. After decades of civil war in Sudan, (one of the longest running civil wars in the world) the rebel leader finally hung his gun, got down to a peace pact with his nemesis president Bashir, and gave a new lease of life to the people of Sudan, Eaast Africa and Africa in general. Knowing that the war pitted southern sudan christians against a moslem north, he showed that people and religions can co exist. Just goes to show that with humility and dialogue, peace can prevail in Africa, a continent known more for civil war.May all warlords follow his example. Peace be upon his departed soul, messiahs will always die too early.

That's where owning the printing press, so to speak, comes in. It's my toy-store so, again, I get to cast the tie-breaking vote, in the honored tradition of Dick Cheney.
The Bottom Line is that I, as publisher, felt that the argument made by those nominating Dubya was compelling. It would be difficult to argue, from my chair, that George W. Bush didn't shape the year 2005, for ill --yes! -- but certainly and even overwhelming the best efforts of those who tried to make the world a better place for us all.
That's a sad commentary on the state of our world, I know. But closest to the Truth as we can get.
Le
t us all hope that 2006 is a better year. Let it be the year of Cindy Sheehan, I'm thinking.
G21 WORLD HQ - We know it's a shocker. But after we polled our staff writers and the Mailing List Membership for nominees for our "Person of the Year 2005" the conclusion of undeniable, even if an anomaly; the person who topped our "Bottom Ten" list was also the person who most affected the history of the world in what our editorial page called "a Hellish year."
The first person to write in with a "Person of the Year" nomination was Kim C. of Koh Samui, THAILAND. He wrote: Hi Rod.
From Clarius U., of Port Hartcourt, NIGERIA, we received: MY NOMINEES:
Mpuhuthumi Ntabeni, of East London, SOUTH AFRICA, said:For me the person who made a real contribution to the advancement of our humanity for his message on 'The Gospel Of Life' was Pope John Paul II. May God give rest to his soul.

Tracy F-H, New Orleans, LA, USA, sent us this: Ok, Rod, gonna vote Rosa Parks! The mother of the Civil Rights Movement has more than paid her dues!
EDITOR'S COMMENT: Okay, you're right! Among the paltry, miniscule number of responses from Members of our Mailing List -- let alone our thousands of readers -- who took time from their holiday revels to choose a Person of the Year, the nominations split pretty evenly between Hurricane Katrina (not a person but an event, mind you,) Rosa Parks and George W. Bush.
