OAKTOWN, CALI - I came to the World Wide Web kicking and screaming.
As far as I was concerned, this was an elitist medium, and all-too White Bread. But now that I clock in two, three times a week, I've bought into the fact that this place is hip and happening. You ain't here, you don't exist, as our Esteemed Editor often insists. I bought it.
And yeah, I have started to see a lot more diversity here in the year or so that I started takin' it seriously. BUT LOOKAHERE, HOMES: Where Are the Sistahs?
There's certainly some great AfrAm sites around these days, I'll give you that. Asians, Latinos, lots more People of Color than when our Publisher abandoned the Dead-Tree world to be part of this thang. But I STILL don't see a lot of sistahs.
I used to go to Net Noir, because of this fine sistah who was a Designer there for a while who I met with Rod at this Net party about a year, year and a half ago. They used to laugh at what G21 is doing, I remember. Do a search for them now and see what they is doing.... My favorite site(uh... That is, other than the G21, Rod) is Cafe de Los Negros, outtah New Yawk. I know Rod has some artistic differences with them as he thinks they are whack for using frames so much, BUT these folks definitely got it going on! Again, though, it's mostly the down wit' the Net brothers, and a couplah sistahs along for the ride.
Our Esteemed Editor used to joke that the "average" person on planet Earth was a 40 year old Chinese woman. That being the case, and I believe him, the Web looks nothing like the world. It don't even look like our country.
I know for a fact there are sistahs out there who have computers, modems and plenty to say. I think it's a shame that we don't hear from 'em. I think SOMEBODY needs to make an effort to see them thrive here.
This is not a new theme for me, but I thought it was about time to bring it up again.
PLUS I know that Rod, Jeff Winbush, Felicity Ussher, a lot of folks here have tried for years to recruit sistahs to write for the G21. Net(pun intended) result:
You see any sistahs on this site, Homes?
To our credit, it sure ain't for lack of trying.
So This Brother says, the Web don't look like the world, or even this country. It's got a long way to go.
Peace Out.
