In a long, and obviously heart-felt letter which was released to ABC NEWS and published on Thursday, Thomas argues that Hunter's office was more concerned with politics and the "spin" for the press than with bringing JonBenet's murderer to justice.

Among Thomas's allegations were that District Attorney Hunter's office:

• Failed to support routine investigative procedures such as search warrants and lie detector tests;
• That the Boulder D.A.'s provided reports of all the findings of the investigation to John and Patsy Ramsey's defence atttorneys on a routine basis;
• That video surveillance cameras were installed in the Ramsey home so that the D.A.'s office(and, by implication, the Ramsey's attorneys) could keep tabs on the progress of the investigation; and
• That the recommendations of the Boulder Police Department's homicide team, and even outside experts like the FBI, were routinely "brushed aside" by the Boulder District Attorney's office, stymying a full and thorough investigation.

In his letter, the photogenic 36 year old homicide-detective-turned-carpenter reveals the core of his many frustrations over this botched two-year investigation, and asserts that justice will never be done under the auspices of the Boulder establishment. He strenuously and repeatedly calls for an independent Special Prosecutor to handle the murder investigation, a call Colorado Governor Romer appears to be taking seriously.

CNN reports that Boulder Mayor Bob Greenlee is not happy with the handling of the outcry caused by Thomas's letter in the community. Greenlee believes that rather than closing ranks and remaining silent, as the PD and DA's offices have done, a forthright response should be made to the allegations, CNN reports.

Thomas writes, in part:

We delayed and ignored, for far too long, that which was "right", in deference of maintaining this dysfunctional relationship with the district attorney's office. This wasn't a runaway train that couldn't be stopped. Some of us bit our tongues as the public was told of this "renewed cooperation" between the police department and the district attorney's office -- this at the very time the detectives and those in the district attorney's office weren't even on speaking terms, the same time you[Chief Beckner] had to act as a liaison between the two agencies because the detectives couldn't tolerate it. I was quite frankly surprised, as you remarked on this camaraderie, that there had not yet been a fistfight.

In Boulder, where the politics, policies, and pervasive thought has held for years, a criminal justice system designed to deal with such an event was not in place. Instead, we had an institution that when needed most, buckled. The system was paralyzed, as to this day one continues to get away with murder.

Will there be a real attempt at justice? I may be among the last to find out. The department assigned me some of the most sensitive and critical assignments in the Ramsey case, including search warrants and affidavits, the Atlanta projects, the interviews of the Ramseys, and many other sensitive assignments I won't mention. I criss-crossed the country, conducting interviews and investigation, pursuing pedophiles and drifters, chasing and discarding leads. I submitted over 250 investigative reports for this case alone. I'd have been happy to assist the grand jury. But the detectives, who know this case better than anyone, were told we would not be allowed as grand jury advisory witnesses, as is common place....

.....Perhaps the DA is hoping for a voluntary confession one day. What's needed, though, is an effective district attorney to conduct the inquiry, not a remorseful killer. [Very clearly, Thomas appears to be alluding to the fact that the Ramsey's are controlling the investigation, is my take on this statement, fellow Sanitation Engineers. --- Tabloid Hart.] The district attorney's office should be the ethical and judicial compass for the community, ensuring that justice is served -- or at least, sought. Instead, our DA has becoming a spinning compass for the media. The perpetuating inference continues that justice is somehow just around the corner. I do not see that occurring, as the two year anniversary of this murder approaches.

It is my belief the district attorney's office has effectively crippled this case. The time for intervention is now. It is difficult to imagine a more compelling situation for the appointment of an entirely independent prosecution team to be introduced into this matter, who would oversee an attempt at righting this case.

TABLOID HART'S COMMENTARY

Not since the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby has any case so rivetted the nation, and no case I can imagine other than that of O.J. Simpson has evidenced the disparity between our belief in EQUAL JUSTICE for all Americans, rich and poor, as this one.

The biggest difference Tabloid Hart can see between this one and the Lindbergh case, if former-Detective Steve Thomas can be believed, is that the best investigative minds in the country were not "brushed aside" as the Boulder District Attorney's office appears to be doing.

Where I live, here in Texas, a child-killer is considered the lowest form of life --- even by other criminals. IF John Ramsey is being shielded by his fat-cat crony friends in the Colorado foothills, then more than one crime is being committed here.

Yellow journalism? Maybe. Ask William Randolph Hearst, or anybody in this here trailer park if they care.

The point is, something is seriously wrong in Boulder, Colorado. Every day that this case isn't solved is a Klaus von Bulow day... Governor Romer of Colorado should most definitely call for an independent Special Prosecutor in this case and put all of our concerns, and those of the community of Boulder, to rest.

He should do it immediately. He should do it because it's right.
